DISTRICT COUNCIL CONVENES; APPROVES PLANS FOR CHILDREN’S NATIONAL REGIONAL OUTPATIENT CENTER AT WOODMORE TOWNE CENTER; CONDUCTS ZONING REWRITE WORK SESSION

On Monday, the County Council, sitting as the District Council, met to review several zoning matters. Among the cases considered, the Council approved final development plans for the Children’s National Regional Outpatient Center at Woodmore Towne Center.   The Council also convened for a Committee of the Whole work session on Zoning Ordinance Rewrite legislation. During the work session, Planning Board staff and County agency officials provided comment on CB-15-2018 (Revised Subdivision Regulations). The next scheduled work session on the Zoning Ordinance Rewrite is scheduled for Tuesday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m., in the Council Hearing Room, First Floor, County Administration Building, 14741 Gov. Oden Bowie Drive, in Upper Marlboro.

COUNTY COUNCIL PRESENTS PROCLAMATIONS; CONVENES LEGISLATIVE SESSION

During its Legislative Session on Tuesday, the County Council presented a proclamation to the founder of Premature Widow, Connie Gilmore, recognizing her exceptional community service.  The Council also considered legislation and approved the appointment of Dr. Hiram Larew and Dr. Arthuree Wright to the Prince George’s County Memorial Library System Board of Trustees. The Council approved the Chair’s signature on Council correspondence: a letter to County Schools CEO, Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, concerning the legacy of public school namesakes in the PGCPS Countywide review of school names; and a letter to Board of Education Chair, Dr. Segun C. Eubanks, regarding the Approved PGCPS FY 2019-FY2024 CIP Budget and CR-33-2018, establishing a P3 Alternative Financing School Infrastructure Work Group. The Council also passed a resolution expressing support for the celebration of the Juneteenth National Freedom Day Observance.

PLANNING, ZONING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

The Council’s Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee met Wednesday to consider legislation and receive a briefing from the Maryland Department of Planning, on the State Development Plan.

HEALTH, EDUCATION AND HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE

The Health, Education and Human Services Committee met Wednesday for briefings on Elder Care Programs, Services and Resources, and the Local Management Board (Commission for Children, Youth & Families).

TRANSPORTATION, HOUSING AND THE ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE

The Transportation, Housing and Environment Committee met Thursday and received an update on the Purple Line.  The committee also considered legislation, including amendments to the 2008 Water and Sewer Plan, and legislation regarding commercial recycling, and noise control.

PUBLIC SAFETY AND FISCAL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Public Safety and Fiscal Management Committee met Thursday to consider legislation, including bills addressing the intra-departmental transfer of Appropriations and Supplementary Appropriations, contract approvals, and adjusting the Public Safety and School Facilities surcharges. The committee also held a briefing on CB-4-2018, An Act Concerning Public Campaign Financing.

Juneteenth

JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Marking the date that the last enslaved people learned of their freedom, the month of June and the nineteenth day were combined to form the word Juneteenth.  Mark your calendar for the Prince George’s County Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 16th, starting at Noon, in Watkins Regional Park.    It’s a must-attend free event, held rain or shine.

EDI FUND CELEBRATION

Council Member Derrick L. Davis joined County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, for a press conference and celebration of the Economic Development Incentive Fund, which has now stimulated $1 Billion in investments in Prince George’s County.
