Prince George's County Recognizes World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

LARGO, MD – On November 20, 2022, The Prince George’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) will recognize the international World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims (WDoR). In honor of WDoR, the Street Smart regional road safety campaign of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) “Lives Shatter on Impact” Testimonial Wall will be on display, along with Vision Zero Prince George’s banners and a memorial wreath, at the Mall at Prince George’s from 12 pm - 6 pm.

The Street Smart “Lives Shatter on Impact” Testimonial Wall shares stories of people’s lives that have been shattered on impact. The Street Smart campaign’s educational efforts complement the work of state and local governments and agencies to build safer streets and sidewalks, enforce laws, and train better drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. This will be the third year DPW&T will join community members in more than 50 U.S. cities to memorialize the record-number of people killed in roadway crashes and demand action to stem the safety crisis. On World Day of Remembrance, as every year, the objective is to provide a platform for road traffic victims and their families to:

  • Remember all people killed and seriously injured on the roads
  • Acknowledge the crucial work of the emergency services
  • Draw attention to the generally trivial legal response to culpable road deaths and injuries and advocate for an appropriately serious response
  • Advocate for better support for road traffic victims and their families
  • Promote evidence-based actions to prevent and eventually stop further road traffic deaths and injuries

“We all play a part in making our roads safe for everyone. Participation in the Vision Zero Safety Pledge means everyone in the community shares responsibility for ensuring the safety of people on the roads, whether they are walking, bicycling, riding motorcycles or driving,” said County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “World Day of Remembrance is one way we as Prince Georgians can provide support to those suffering from a loss.”

“At DPW&T, we take road traffic safety very seriously and take this important day to honor the lives that were taken from road crashes,” said DPW&T Director Michael Johnson. “We are improving our roadways to provide safe mobility options, and we encourage each of our residents to practice road safety and take the Vision Zero Safety Pledge to reduce and eliminate traffic fatalities in our County.”

The current crash data confirms a countywide issue that will require a multi-faceted approach. The County’s Vision Zero Prince George’s strategy looks to tackle this head on with a safe system approach using the six essential elements for a safe transportation system: Education, Emergency Response, Engineering, Enforcement, Evaluation and Equity. DPW&T, in partnership with regional, state and community partners, is committed to enhancing roadway safety throughout Prince George’s County. Implementing Vision Zero efforts have emphasized our commitment to the community through data-driven engineering projects, traffic safety programs and outreach such as the Street Smart “Lives Shatter on Impact” Testimonial Wall.
