The Time to Invest in Prince George’s County is Now

BisNow Event in College Park Highlights Economic Development Progress

Dear Friends:

Yesterday I had the opportunity to participate in a BisNow economic summit at The Hotel at the University of Maryland. It gave me and my economic team an opportunity to speak directly to the business community about our vision for economic development across the County. In talking to the developers and hearing directly from them, the message was clear, we all agree that now is the time to invest in Prince George’s County.

There was a time when businesses weren’t looking at our County, but that time is long gone. They have seen the improvements we are making in education and public safety. They see that we have the fifth most profitable Wegman’s in the country, the most profitable Copper Canyon, a Whole Foods that is exceeding expectations, one of the most successful Tanger Outlets, a Busboys and Poets that is outperforming the DC location and soon we will have an Ivy City Smokehouse that does the same thing.

We are pairing that with a modern, nimble government that has made investments, $5 million in this year’s budget alone, to improve technology, making the permitting process easier to navigate. We are also working with the County Council to enhance our ability to offer incentives to the right project. While we are in the top four percent of the wealthiest counties in the country, 10 of the top 25 wealthiest counties are right here in our region. We believe these incentives will help us successfully compete for the amenities you want and deserve.

You can see evidence of this across the County as we look at New Carrollton with the Kaiser Permanente headquarters and soon-to-be home of the new WMATA headquarters and a mixed-use development that will see housing, dining and hotel amenities. Traveling further south we have the new Capital Region Medical Center and the soon-to-be Carillon project in Downtown Largo, as well as what is a hidden gem, but not for long, the soon-to-be Suitland Town Center. We are working to bring the desired amenities to these projects and many others across Prince George's County.

These projects are just scratching the surface of the billions of dollars worth of development that is taking place or in the pipeline throughout our County. As my administration moves forward, we will work with developers to focus our efforts on bringing quality dining and entertainment options to the county, investing in our inner beltway communities, continuing to develop around our Metro and soon to be Purple Line stations and working to bring national companies to the County.

In all that we do, we will make sure that we only bring the right projects, to the right locations at the right time. The benefits will not be only to the investors, but to all citizens of Prince George’s. It is your desire and deservedness, along with the purchasing power we have, that makes our county the place to invest, so we will be sure that we deliver the shopping, dining and entertainment amenities you want.

Yours in service,

Angela Alsobrooks
