MEETS ON ZONING MATTERS; RECEIVES BRIEFING ON COUNCIL INITIATIVES
On Monday, April 23, the County
Council sat as the District Council to consider zoning matters, and received
two briefings on Council initiatives. President
and CEO of Venture Philanthropy Partners (VPP), Carol Thompson Cole, and two
VPP Partners, briefed the Council on the VPP Ready for Work initiative. Senator Gloria G. Lawlah, former Secretary,
Maryland Department of Aging, and Dr. Christopher Keeyes, President, Clinical
Pharmacy Associates, briefed the Council on the Telepharmacy Initiative.

COUNCIL BEGINS LEGISLATIVE PROCESS FOR ZONING REWRITE
On Tuesday, April 24, County Council staff members presented a briefing on the Zoning Ordinance Rewrite (ZOR) Legislation (CB-13-2018, CB-14-2018, CB-15-2018) as well as an overview of the Council’s webpage and communications tools to keep the public informed and allow public comment on the ZOR legislation. Following the briefing, the three bills were presented by the Chair at the request of the Planning Board and referred to the Committee of the Whole which will hold several work sessions including three for public comment. The first will be on May 14th and the following two will be in July.

OPPOSES TRANSFER OF BW PARKWAY AWAY FROM NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
The Council passed CR-024-2018,
a resolution concerning the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, to declare its opposition
to the transfer of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway away from the National Park
Service.

2018 - COUNTY COUNCIL CHAIR DANNIELLE GLAROS ISSUES STATEMENT ON FULL FUNDING
OF METRO
Governor Larry Hogan today signed
into law HB0372, the Maryland Metro/Transit Funding Act, fully supporting
Maryland’s share of dedicated funding for Metro, including $167 million in FY
2019.
The Prince George’s County
Council celebrates this vital investment in our region’s transportation system,
which promises a better quality of life for our residents, and economic
prosperity for Prince George’s County, our region and the state of Maryland. We
commend the leadership and partnership of the Prince George’s County Delegation
in this achievement, and appreciate the opportunity to collaborate in the best
interests of our residents.
We congratulate our Council colleagues and
Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) board members, Immediate
Past Chair, Derrick L. Davis (D-District 6), and Council Member Todd Turner
(D-District 4), Chair of Rules and General Assembly, both of whom worked
tirelessly to articulate Metro’s critical importance to Prince George’s County,
build consensus in the region and the state around restoring confidence in the
Metro system, and commit to long-term dedicated funding.

Assembly Committee briefed the County Council on the status of legislation considered
in the 2018 Maryland General Assembly Session.

HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED M-NCPPC BUDGETS
The Council conducted a public
hearing on the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC)
Proposed Fiscal year 2018-2019 Operating and Capital Budgets and the M-NCPPC
Capital Improvement Program for Fiscal Years 2019-2024. The next FY 19 Budget
Public Hearings are scheduled for May 1 and May 7.

Council Members and Residents Participate in Community “Clean-Up, Green-Up Events”
The Spring 2018 Prince George's County " Clean Up Green Up" Community-wide event promotes green neighborhoods by bringing together members of the community to clean common areas, removing weeds and debris; and providing mulch for flowerbeds and trees.
Prince George’s County Council Member Deni Taveras will join residents of the Prince George’s County Takoma Park Community for a District 2 “Clean Up Green Up!” event on Saturday, April 28, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., beginning on the corner of Red Top Road and Fairview Avenue in Takoma Park, Maryland. This event will also feature a street renaming ceremony for Sawa’s Hope Circle. Formerly known as Greenbriar Avenue, Sawa's Hope Circle was renamed in honor of District 2 resident Sawa Kamara and her advocacy for safer, cleaner neighborhoods in the community.
Council Vice-Chair Todd M. Turner joins residents of the Greenspring Community for a “District 4 Clean Up Green Up!” event on Saturday, April 28, 2018, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 Noon, beginning on the corner of Greenspring Lane and Greenbelt Road in Lanham, Maryland.
District 7 Council Member Karen Toles will join residents and the DuPont Village community for the Clean-Up Green-Up Neighborhood Walk event on Saturday, April 28, 2018, starting at 9:00 a.m. at the Edgar Allen Poe School parking lot on Shadyside Avenue.
