COUNCIL PRESENTS PROCLAMATION; MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH
The County Council began session on Tuesday, April 17, by recognizing May as “Mental Health Awareness Month.” Council Chair Dannielle Glaros and Council Member Mel Franklin also presented a proclamation to “Swift” Jarrett Hurd, a Gwynn Park High School graduate, recognizing him as the WBA/IBF/IBO 154-pound World Boxing Champion. COUNCIL LEGISLATIVE SESSION INCLUDES BRIEFINGS ON MGM NATIONAL HARBOR AND CENSUS 2020
During the Council’s Legislative Session on Tuesday, April 17, Office of the County Executive staff briefed the Council on CB-10-2018 and CB-11-2018, two pieces of legislation to regulate Short Term Rentals in Prince George’s County, which the Council is considering by request of the County Executive. The Council was briefed Tuesday from MGM National Harbor representatives on compliance with local hiring goals, and provided an annual update on the status of MGM operations. U.S. Census Bureau representatives and a consultant to the Bauman Foundation briefed the Council on Census 2020 and its significance to Prince George’s County. The Council is particularly concerned that Prince George’s County residents are accurately counted in this once-in-a-decade work.

COUNCIL FY 2019 BUDGET PUBLIC HEARING ON TUESDAY, APRIL 24TH
The Prince George’s County Council will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:00 PM, in the Council Hearing Room, First Floor County Administration Building in Upper Marlboro, on the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Proposed Fiscal Year 2018-2019 Operating and Capital Budgets, and Capital Improvement Program for Fiscal Years 2019-2024.

CHAIR GLAROS DELIVERS REMARKS AT COUNTY’S 2018 STATE OF THE ECONOMY
Council Chair Glaros addressed the audience during the annual Prince George’s County State of the Economy Breakfast on April 18, sponsored by the Greater Prince George’s Business Roundtable and the Prince George’s County Economic Development Forum. Vice-Chair Todd Turner, and Council Members Derrick L. Davis, Andrea C. Harrison, Mel Franklin, Karen R. Toles and Deni Taveras were also in attendance.

COUNCIL CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING OF NEW PRINCE GEORGE’S COMMUNITY COLLEGE CULINARY ARTS BUILDING
Council Chair Dannielle Glaros, Vice-Chair Todd Turner, and Council Members Derrick L. Davis, Andrea C. Harrison, and Karen R. Toles, joined Prince George’s Community College president, Dr. Charlene M. Dukes, County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, and other elected officials and community members, on Thursday, April 19, to cut the ribbon on the newly constructed Culinary Arts Building on the Largo campus, and celebrate the Grand Opening of the new Culinary Arts Program. The Largo campus and new facility are in District 6, represented by Council Member Davis, who addressed the audience. Council Members also presented a Proclamation in honor of the event. The center is a welcoming presence at the newly-revitalized campus entrance, and is the result of key partnerships in the County.

BOARD OF HEALTH LAUNCHES “TELEHEALTH” INITIATIVE FOR COUNTY’S SENIOR RESIDENTS
The County Council, sitting as the Board of Health, in cooperation with Clinical Pharmacy Associates, Inc., launched the “Mednovate Connect – Senior Telepharmacy Project” in Prince George’s County, with its first education and enrollment session on April 18 at the Camp Springs Senior Activity Center. This initiative uses telecommunications technologies to connect seniors living independently in Prince George’s County with clinical pharmacists to deliver direct pharmaceutical care. Council Member Karen R. Toles, Immediate Past Chair of the Council’s Health, Education and Human Services (HEHS) committee, says she and her Council colleagues serving as the Board of Health, are working to close gaps in the healthcare of residents, embrace technological advancements such as “telehealth” options, and support senior residents who need additional assistance with medication management. The Laurel-Beltsville Senior Center, and the St. Paul Senior Residents Housing in Capitol Heights are also program sites.
