COMMISSION ON INNOVATION & EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION (KIRWAN COMMISSION)
To
heighten understanding of the work of the landmark Kirwan Commission, the
Council was briefed this week on education and education infrastructure, topics
discussed during its Annual Retreat in January.
The esteemed panel of presenters included: Senator Paul Pinsky; Delegate
Alonzo Washington; Kimberly R. Humphrey, Esq., ACLU of Maryland, Legislative
Council for Education; Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell, CEO, PGCPS; Theresa Dudley,
President, Prince George's County Educators Association; and Alvin Thornton,
Ph.D., Former Chair, Prince George's County Board of Education, and Chair,
Maryland Commission of Education Finance Equity and Excellence (Thornton

BOARD OF HEALTH
Sitting
as the Board of Health this week, the Council heard from two panels of
healthcare experts as a follow up to discussions held during the its Annual
Retreat in January. First, representatives from University of Maryland Capital
Region Health and the University of Maryland Medical System presented on how
hospitals are reimbursed in the state of Maryland - the Maryland Global

second panel of experts briefing the Council on the Prince George’s County
Primary Healthcare Strategic Plan and ways to strengthen the County’s primary
care network, included presenters Pamela Creekmur, RN, County Health Officer;
Boris Lushniak, MD, MPH, Dean, University of Maryland School of Public Health;
Denice Cora-Bramble, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Officer, Ambulatory & Community
Health Services, Children’s National Health System; and Alicia Wilson,

MISSION OF LOVE DAY CENTER OPENING
Council Chair Dannielle Glaros, Council
Member Derrick L. Davis, Council Member Andrea C. Harrison, and Council Member
Karen Toles (not pictured) participated in the Mission of Love grand opening
event on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, celebrating its new Day Center serving
individuals experiencing homelessness. The Mission of Love Day Center is open
Mondays and Wednesdays between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. for homeless
individuals to receive mail, shower, do laundry, use computers, and more. The Day Center is located at 6180 Old Central
Avenue, Capitol Heights. The County’s
Crisis Hotline number 2-1-1 operates 24/7 to assist with all social service

COUNCIL SUPPORTS
COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS’ RESOLUTIONS FOR AN IMPROVED METRO SYSTEM
On February 13th, the Council approved a Joint Signature
Letter from Prince George's and Montgomery counties and CR-8-2018, a Prince
George’s County Council Resolution, expressing support for the Metropolitan
Washington Council of Government’s position on Metro operations, long-term
funding and state of good repair.
On Wednesday, February 14th, Council Vice-Chair Todd M.
Turner joined Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III,
Montgomery County Council President Hans Riemer, Prince George’s County WMATA
Board Member Malcolm Augustine, and other officials testifying before the
Maryland Senate Budget and Taxation Committee in Annapolis on behalf of
Maryland Senate Bill-277- the Maryland Metro Funding Act of 2018.

COUNCIL FY 2019 BUDGET TOWN HALL MEETING
Every year, the County Council hosts several Town Hall meetings.
Please join us for the Council FY 2019 Budget Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday,
February 20, 2018, from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
The Town Hall will be held in the Council Hearing Room, First Floor,
County Administration Building, 14741 Gov. Oden Bowie Drive, Upper Marlboro,
