Hello,
The Historic Maryland Newspapers Project at UMD College Park Libraries is a collaborative National Endowment for the Humanities grant-funded project that digitizes newspapers published from 1690-1963 from across the state of Maryland. The newspapers are freely available through the Library of Congress database, Chronicling America. This is a project that Maryland State Archives has actively supported and contributed collections and resources to since 2012.
For recent phases, the project has digitized newspapers from historically marginalized and underrepresented communities so these communities' histories and stories are accessible in a national database for wider dissemination and learning. The project is seeking additional titles for an upcoming grant application. They will partner with any organization to digitize their content. In the past, the project has partnered with the Maryland State Archives, Enoch Pratt Free Library, public libraries, historical societies, universities, and even the offices of an active newspaper.
If you know about newspapers from Black, ethnically diverse, and immigrant communities, especially those that are not widely known or cataloged, we ask that you fill out this survey and share your knowledge so we can include these newspapers in Chronicling America!
For any questions about the project or about the survey, please contact the project staff directly at lib-newspapers@umd.edu.
Thank you!
