Taxicab Meter Rate to Change in Montgomery County Beginning February 1, 2026
Beginning Sunday, February 1, 2026, all Montgomery County taxicabs including wheelchair accessible vehicle taxicabs will implement a rate change from $2 per mile to $2.50 per mile. Additionally, a nighttime surcharge of $1 is being established for trips between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. There has not been a taxi meter rate change in more than 15 years.
The Taxicab Services Commission and taxicab industry stakeholders recommended that an adjustment to the rate was necessary to maintain service viability, attract and retain qualified drivers, and in turn, increase reliability. The rate was established based on comparisons with surrounding jurisdictions and with a goal of balancing driver earnings with passenger affordability. Regional comparisons helped assess economic competitiveness and provided context to ensure Montgomery County’s taxi meter rates are neither unreasonably high nor too low to sustain local service.
The $1 nighttime surcharge is designed to improve late-night service availability by compensating operators for working during hours when demand could be lower and operating costs are higher. There is also a public health and safety aspect to incentivizing more taxicabs to be on the road in the evenings. Montgomery County residents and guests may want to enjoy nighttime activities and ensuring that they have multiple, viable, transportation options is essential.
The County’s Call-n-Ride program will continue to provide subsidies to help offset on-demand taxi transportation costs for qualifying residents. To learn more about Call-n-Ride, visit the Call-n-Ride website or call 301-948-5409 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Notifications about the upcoming rate increase and updated taxi meter rate sheets will be placed on all Montgomery County taxicabs.
