Wednesday, October 8, 2025 | Department of Environmental Protection
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is proud to unveil its latest Annual Energy Benchmarking Report. This comprehensive report offers a snapshot of how Montgomery County buildings are performing in terms of energy use and efficiency. It highlights year-over-year trends in benchmarking compliance, tracks progress toward Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS), and allows for exploration of the data by benchmarking group, property type, and more.
The 2024 report reflects energy benchmarking data submitted through October 1, 2025—the official deadline for public disclosure. Whether you're a building owner, policymaker, or sustainability advocate, this report offers valuable insights into how our built environment is evolving to meet climate goals.
To view additional data and past reports, visit DEP's Disclosed Data and Reports site.
Montgomery County is excited to provide benchmarkers with Building Energy Benchmarking Scorecards. This year’s scorecards offer a fresh, user-friendly format that clearly shows each building’s progress toward meeting the County’s Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS). They also include tailored resources to help you take the next step toward energy efficiency and compliance.
Sign up for a DEP BEPS Scorecards and Compliance Options webinar on October 30 from noon to 2 to dig deeper into the scorecards and BEPS compliance options.
If your building hasn’t yet met the BEPS targets, DEP recommends the following actions:
🔍 1. Review Your Benchmarking Data with DEP
Ensure your building’s Normalized Net Site Energy Use Intensity (NN EUI) and BEPS targets accurately reflect its size, property type, and energy use. Get started with a free, onsite engineering consultation from a DEP engineer—this is the simplest way to receive personalized, actionable recommendations. 📧 Schedule today: Energy@MontgomeryCountyMD.gov
🛠️ 2. Conduct an Energy Audit with Support from the Green Bank
The Montgomery County Green Bank’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP) connects you with vetted vendors to conduct energy audits, explore electrification, install EV charging, and more. The Green Bank also offers financing options, including C-PACE, to help you move forward with confidence.
💡 3. Access Incentives Through EmPOWER Maryland
Take advantage of utility incentives for lighting, HVAC, refrigeration, and custom energy projects. Training for building staff is also available. Pepco customers can contact Dave Lowe for more information.
If you did not receive a scorecard and you were expecting to receive one or would like another copy, please contact energy@montgomerycountymd.gov.
Have a case study, strategy, or innovation that can help building professionals advance energy performance? The 2026 Montgomery County Energy Summit wants to hear from you!

Affordable Electrification Outreach Program Grants
Maryland Energy Administration is providing competitive grants to support nonprofit and community-based organizations in conducting outreach across the state to educate owners and tenants of single-family and multi-family dwellings on the benefits of building electrification, with an emphasis on how to pair electrification measures with energy efficiency and renewable energy upgrades to maximize savings.
Learn more and apply by December 31, 2025.
Electrifying Community Buildings Program
This program provides Maryland community-serving buildings with the opportunity to request funding for projects that facilitate the efficient electrification of existing building systems, which may result in lifecycle cost reductions as well as zero onsite emissions. Funding will help more Marylanders cover a portion of upfront costs related to building electrification efforts and help facilities whose primary function is to serve the public shift from wasteful fossil fuel-powered equipment to greener electric alternatives. Eligible building types include hospitals, schools, multifamily housing, houses of worship, and other community buildings.
