You can make me or accept me, you carry me in your pocket yet never hold me forever. What am I?

If you said, CHANGE - you are correct!!
The US Mint may stop producing the penny, but no one can stop change!
Spring has sprung, the showers have brought May flowers, and summer is right around the corner. In addition to all the blossoms blooming, there are changes on the horizon when it comes to energy and electricity bills, and we want to make sure you know about everything!
Changes are inevitable and that is why we have created Montgomery Energy Connection; it is your link to energy savings and our goal is to make sure that this newsletter provides you with everything you need to know to lower your utility costs and keep money in your pocket.
Montgomery County has been promoting solar co-ops and group buying since 2015 and while we have gone through many different names for the program, now known as Switch Together, the main goal has always been to help residents go solar at a discounted rate. We have also been committed to making sure people understand the process of going solar which includes informational sessions that describe the tax credit, known to most as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC). Since the ITC was enacted in 2006, it has provided homeowners with a credit toward their federal tax bill worth 30% of their full solar installation cost. But that is all changing.
A draft bill in the House Ways and Means Committee would terminate Section 25D of the U.S. Tax Code, the residential solar tax credit, at the end of 2025. This means that the 30% tax credit will only be available for installations completed by December 31, 2025.
Not to put any undue pressure on you, BUT if you would like to not only get that 30% tax credit but also a solar array at a 25% market discount, you need to sign up for the Switch Together program by June 4, 2025.
By registering for Switch Together, you'll receive a free installation proposal from pre-qualified installers. This proposal is customized to your home and will help you make an informed decision. You will also receive a personal recommendation immediately upon registering.
Just a reminder that Switch Together uses the power of group buying to secure a competitive price for your solar installation through a reverse auction process. The current program is expected to save the average household $6,201 on a typical-sized solar installation and, the 30% federal tax credit can further reduce your costs, making solar energy more accessible than ever before. But this rate is only available until June 4, 2025.
We will be promoting a late summer Switch Together program, but the rates will not be the same.

As temperatures rise, so can your energy use and your monthly bill. That's because air conditioners and cooling systems work harder during hot weather, driving up electricity usage. Other summer rate changes include:
Electric Supply Increase - residents will see about an $18 increase* in their electric supply cost compared to summer 2024.* This is a pass-through cost for the electricity Pepco buys on the customers’ behalf, unless they have a third-party supplier.
EmPOWER Maryland Surcharge - residents will see about a $3 increase in their delivery costs compared to 2024 due to changes in the EmPOWER Maryland surcharge which supports energy efficiency programs that help customers save energy and money. This rate change took effect in January 2025.
Distribution Rates - residents’ distribution charge will also switch to summer rates. This rate, which appears in the delivery portion of your bill, will stay the same as last summer, but summer rates are higher than winter ones. That’s because energy use rises in the warmer months, and so do the costs to maintain and upgrade our local energy grid. Rates are regulated and approved by the Maryland Public Service Commission.
So, what does this really look like? Below is a chart to give you a better understanding of the impact to your utility bill.
