Celebrating One Year of the Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center
This month will mark the one-year anniversary of the grand opening of the Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC). The SSRAC is just minutes away from the metro station and is a sprawling 120,000 square foot building that provides recreational and aquatic based activities for all members of the family, including youth, adults and seniors.
Since its grand opening, the SSRAC has hosted summer camps and out-of-school day events for youth. It has been great seeing young participants take advantage of everything in the center from cooking demonstrations in the teaching kitchen, to water time in the pools, to games of basketball in the gymnasium and more.
The Silver Spring Senior Center, nestled within the SSRAC, hosts daily, weekly and monthly events ranging from dance socials, exercise classes, afternoon movie showcases and more. The center participates in a congregate meal program, in partnership with the County’s Department of Health and Human Services, offering a hot meal at lunchtime for seniors. Holy Cross Health also operates on the second floor of the building, providing County residents access to health services.
Many County residents have enjoyed the SSRAC’s amenities for free thanks to Montgomery County Recreation’s RecFit pass, including free access to the center's fitness room, game room and open gym (drop-in) activities.
The response to the SSRAC opening has been overwhelmingly positive and Montgomery County Recreation staff continue to seek ways to continue to grow activity at the center. The team continues to listen to YOU for what you want to see in the space. Learn more about the SSRAC and check out the calendar of activities on our website!
