RESIDENTIAL: Do you still have incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs in your light fixtures? How about in your closets or the attic? Time to swap those out for energy efficient LED bulbs. Illumination Stations are informational events that provide an opportunity to shine a light on ways for people to lower their utility bills, apply for energy assistance, and swap out your inefficient bulbs. Please note, we only have 60W equivalent bulbs to provide and while you can bring us as many as you can find, we only have 3 bulbs available per person. COUNTY: Resilience hubs are trusted gathering spaces that are enhanced with solar microgrids and energy efficiency improvements to ensure they stay operational during interruptions to the power grid. They support and engage residents, distribute resources, and reduce carbon pollution while enhancing quality of life and assisting communities before, during and after emergencies to minimize impacts and recover quickly. Montgomery County continues its work to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and address climate-related risks through the Climate Action Plan. The County will offer a free workshop on Tuesday, May 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building at 1 Veterans Place in Silver Spring on the role resilience hubs can play in helping our community adapt and thrive. COUNTY: The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund is an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate the adoption of greenhouse gas reducing technologies and position the United States to compete and win the 21st century economy. One of the awardees of this funding in the Montgomery County Green Bank. They are seeking a qualified contractor or team of contractors to provide program administration support to the Green Bank for activities associated with implementation of programming under the GGRF. Contractors are welcome to submit proposals as individuals or firms, and for the entirety of the scope or work or individual parts. The submission period is from May 1 – June 30, 2024.

NATIONAL: The U.S. Department of the Treasury (Treasury) launched a website intended to serve as a go-to resource for consumers, businesses, nonprofits, and state, local, and Tribal governments as they wade through IRA’s tax credit policies and guidance. The website includes tax guidance language, tools for consumers to find out how they can benefit from the tax incentives, and graphics detailing IRA’s impact so far. The website includes a link to the Treasury’s IRA Taxpayer Resource Hub, which helps homeowners, small business owners, and vehicle buyers learn about the IRA tax credits that apply to them.

During Earth Month, the Department of Environmental Protection's Residential Energy Program Manager, Larissa Johnson, was out and about. The Town of Chevy Chase invited Ms. Johnson to present at their Go Electric EcoFest about what Montgomery County is doing to help residents use less energy in their homes, switch from fossil fuels, and invest in renewable energy. In partnership with Montgomery Parks, we are looking for our Next Top Energy Star! Attend our Energy Star program and pass the challenges: learn about electricity, tackle the topic of pollution, and identify sources of energy. All participants will take the Energy Star Pledge and receive their very own Next Top Energy Star kit to take home to show the world that you’re a Star. This event takes place at Meadowside Nature Center on Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 10:00 am - 11:00 am. There is no fee to participate but registering is encouraged.
