If you own a home or business in certain parts of Montgomery County, you may be eligible for federal tax credits for installing EV charging at your property. A new mapping tool shows eligible non-urban and lower-income locations. Some locations are only eligible in 2024.
If you're planning on installing EV charging (or installed in 2023) you can receive a tax credit of 30% of the cost, up to $1,000. Business and investment properties can get back up to $100,000. See the full information on IRS.gov.
Qualifying property must be located in eligible census tracts. "An eligible census tract is a population census tract that is a low-income community that is not an urban area." Use the new mapping tool to determine if your property is eligible.
Maryland Department of Transportation has released a Request for Proposals to to develop DC Fast Charging stations along designated highways through the federally-funded NEVI Program. Submissions to the RFP are due by April 10, 2024.
Montgomery County businesses in designated target areas along I-495 and MD-200 are eligible to host NEVI-funded stations. Charging service providers that respond to the state RFP will need to provide a site agreement with an eligible property in their response.
Eligible properties and charging service providers can contact the Montgomery County Green Bank to find partners and competitive financing options.
Snow is in the forecast this weekend across our region, so let's check out what experts are saying about charging your EV in cold weather.
You may have read about recent events in the Chicago where cold weather resulted in extremely long lines to charge, dead batteries, and a lot of frustration.
According to a study by Consumer Reports that compared battery performance among different models, range for some models can be up to 25% lower in very cold weather. This is because "an EV has to produce cabin heat and manage an optimal battery temperature with energy that comes from the battery, in turn reducing range."
To help drivers have a stress-free experience, the Zero Emission Transportation Association (ZETA2030) produced a video and guide to best practices for EVs in cold weather. Among other tips, park your car indoors if possible, maintain a charge between 20-80% to optimize battery performance, and use seat heaters instead of heating the cabin if you want to conserve power.
If you're looking for more, the Out of Spec Studios Podcast brought the team together for a deep dive into the causes of the Chicago events, how EV batteries work, and how to avoid ending up in the cold.
