VITA's Monthly Tax Tip: Changes to Retirement Contributions
The following is an excerpt from IR-2023-203:
The Internal Revenue Service recently announced the amount individuals can contribute to their 401(k) plans in 2024 has increased to $23,000, up from $22,500 for 2023. The IRS also issued technical guidance regarding all of the cost of living adjustments affecting dollar limitations for pension plans and other retirement-related items for tax year 2024 in Notice 2023-75.
Highlights of changes for 2024: The contribution limit for employees who participate in 401(k), 403(b), and most 457 plans, as well as the federal government's Thrift Savings Plan is increased to $23,000, up from $22,500.
The limit on annual contributions to an IRA increased to $7,000, up from $6,500. The IRA catch up contribution limit for individuals aged 50 and over was amended under the SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 (SECURE 2.0) to include an annual cost of living adjustment but remains $1,000 for 2024.

You are not eligible to get a computer if you already received one from the County. You must have a library card number https://mcpl.link/DigitalCard before you make your appointment. Everyone receiving a computer has to appear in person to pick it up and bring photo ID and proof of address.

Self-Sufficiency Standard Report: The 2023 report is available for download on the Community Action Agency website and access the new Interactive Self-Sufficiency Standard. Another helpful tool is the Maryland Self-Sufficiency Standard Calculator, which was developed by the Maryland Community Action Partnership and the University of Washington. This interactive tool allows users to determine the Standard for different family compositions throughout the state.

The Montgomery County Crisis Center is available for call in, walk in, mobile outreach, community referrals, and substance use assessment and referrals (240-777-4000). 311 provides weekday assistance, 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., for health and human services, housing, transportation, and food assistance (311 for local numbers, or 240-777-0311). For medical emergencies, fires, reporting crimes, disaster response, and life-saving situations, call 911.
