Earlier this year, Fannie Mae launched the 2023 Multifamily Energy and Water Survey. This is a national survey effort to collect energy and water consumption data for multifamily properties in the United States, and this data will allow EPA to update the 1-100 ENERGY STAR score and the EPA Water Score for multifamily properties to represent today’s building performance.
These publicly available metrics allow building owners and managers to track and compare their energy and water use and make strategic investments in efficiency. Currently, they rely on data from Fannie Mae’s Multifamily Energy and Water Market Research Survey conducted in 2013, and without sufficient participation in the survey, we will be unable to update these scores.
Unlike commercial buildings, multifamily properties do not have a federally supported national survey of utility consumption, cost, and building characteristics and help is needed to collect this information. To allow more organizations to take advantage of the survey, the deadline has been extended to Thursday, August 31, 2023. If you have already benchmarked your multifamily building, please consider participating! Learn more and start the survey.
Pepco has announced that beginning Friday, September 1, 2023, they are launching a new Energy Usage Data System to replace the current process. The new tool will help retrieve whole building energy usage data for single or multi-tenant commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. In addition to reporting your building’s aggregated usage to ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, the Energy Usage Data System and enables users to:
-
View your portfolio of buildings
- Create data requests for aggregated whole building data
- Verify the units in the building(s)
- Visualize whole building usage data
- Determine whole building energy performance
- Connect to and send/receive data with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager
In preparation for this transition, all current Pepco Resource Advisor users will receive an email on September 1 with more information about how to enroll, training opportunities, and additional building owner resources. You must enroll in the new tool to ensure continued access to your building data, as well as continued connection to the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager.
All Resource Advisor requests submitted to the Key Account support team will be forwarded to the dedicated Energy Usage Data System support team. If you have any questions, please email the team at support@exelonenergyusagedata.com.

Montgomery County broke ground on the 6th district County Police station, which is scheduled to be operational in Spring of 2025.
The project is designed to achieve net-zero energy performance utilizing microgrid technology and onsite solar power generation. The building systems are fully electrified in keeping with Montgomery County climate goals. The building was designed and will be delivered under the International Green Construction Code (IgCC 2018) requirements. The building's microgrid technology will also enable the station to continue supporting its 178 member staff and serving the community when electric or power failures occur.
