New Ride On Trip Planner App Available for Download
Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) partnered with Moovit, a global mobility trip planning mobile app software company, to launch a new Ride On Trip Planner – a Ride On bus passenger load and local trip planning app. This new, innovative app will allow riders to plan their next trip and to tell how crowded a Ride On bus is – before it arrives – with the crowdedness indicator on the app. Riders can choose if they want to get on the arriving bus, wait for the next bus depending on how many people are on the bus, or choose another travel option, such as other local transit services, bikeshare, and scooter. It gives riders more control over their transportation experience. The app also includes dashboards for the Ride On Central Communications team to monitor bus loads and more quickly dispatch additional buses when buses are full.

|
The Ride On Trip Planner app is easy to use and can be downloaded from the Google Play or Apple app store, or accessed with our desktop version. Riders can select their trip origin and destination and then pick the most desirable route that fits their travel plans. Once the route is chosen, the app will give the exact time the next bus will arrive, while providing step-by-step directions on how to get to the bus stop and how to get to the rider’s destination after getting off the bus. The app will also notify riders when it's time to get off the bus, without having to worry about missing their stop. The app was created to alleviate stress and worry about bus times and continue to reduce the spread of infectious diseases with the crowdedness indicator.
During the first 30 days of the app's release, Ride On looked for user feedback. Riders were encouraged to download the app, use all its features, and share their experience with Ride On by emailing comments to RideOn.TripPlanner@montgomerycountymd.gov, through MC311 or via social media. This feedback was used to optimize the application for its official release on July 5. Additional comments are welcome.
Riders can continue to plan trips online with Ride On Real Time (www.rideon.app). For more information, visit www.RideOnBus.com/TripPlanner .

Ride On Re-Introduced the After 9 p.m. Courtesy Stop Program on July 2
Ride On is excited to re-introduce our Courtesy Stop Program, which is designed to enhance the customers’ experience and provide greater convenience during late-night travels. Passengers can request a drop-off at any location along our regular routes after 9 p.m., subject to a few limitations.
- Starts after 9 p.m. until end of service
- exclusively for drop-offs (boardings will not be permitted)
- the exact location of the stop will be at the operator's discretion, ensuring that it is safe for both passengers and the operator.
- front door only when exiting at requested stops
- must be on the regular route (bus will not divert)
- there will be no intersection, highway or freeway drop offs
- express buses are exempt from this initiative.
Passengers should inform the operator when boarding if they know they will request a courtesy stop; when nearing the drop off location, pull the bell cord, proceed to the front door, and ask the operator to stop at a safe location.
More details about the Courtesy Stop Program can be found online here.

Ride On Celebrated Pride Month with the Ride with Pride Bus and Inclusive Initiatives
In honor of Pride Month, Ride On proudly showcased its commitment to inclusivity and support of the LGBTQ+ community. One of the highlights of this celebration was the introduction of the Pride Bus, which was wrapped with the Intersex Progress Pride Flag, adorned with Ride with Pride messaging, and features eye-catching neon lights that made it stand out, especially at night. This dedicated bus symbolized Ride On's unwavering support for LGBTQ+ voices, culture, and civil rights.
Throughout the month of June, all MCDOT buses displayed #RidewithPride posters on board. To further engage riders and provide educational resources, the posters featured a QR code that directed users to the MCDOT Ride with Pride webpage. This webpage offers valuable information about the historical and cultural significance of the LGBTQ+ community, fostering awareness and understanding.
To kick off this exciting initiative on June 1st, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, along with county officials, took part in the inaugural journey of the Pride Bus. Their ride led them to a special ceremony held outside the Executive Office Building in Rockville, where the Progress Pride Flag was raised. This symbolic act not only demonstrated the county's commitment to diversity and equality but also served as a powerful reminder of the progression of LGBTQ+ rights.
Ride On is proud to support and celebrate Pride Month by creating a safe and inclusive environment for all riders. The Ride with Pride Bus and the #RidewithPride poster displays on all MCDOT buses in June served as a reminder of our ongoing commitment to equality, acceptance, and respect for the LGBTQ+ community. We invite everyone to join us in celebrating Pride Month and to ride with pride on Ride On buses throughout Montgomery County in the future. Together, let's continue to promote inclusion within our community and beyond.
Ride On Annual Food Drive Collects a "Ton" of Food
Ride On's annual food drive partnership with Manna Food Center collected 2,309 pounds of food this year, a 12% increase over last year. The food drive took place from May 21-27. Non-perishable food items were dropped off on all Ride On, extRa, Flex and Flash buses. Riders who donated food had their bus fare waived.
MCDOT has conducted the food drive for more than 30 years in partnership with Manna Food Center. Last year, the food drive expanded to include five Montgomery County Public Libraries and the County’s five Regional Services Centers, which also took in non-perishable food donations this year.
Ride On would like to thank everyone who helped make this food drive possible, especially those who donated food to help feed our community.

An Interview with TAG Member Lorin Obler

|
How long have you been riding with Ride On and what year did you begin?
I have been using Ride On for 12 years, since I moved to Montgomery County in 2011.
What routes have you ridden the most over the years and for what reasons?
I have most often used the 15 and 12, to get from my house to the Silver Spring Transit Center (where I pick up the Red Line to my office in Washington, DC). I also regularly use the Route 12 to visit friends in Takoma Park; the Route 9 to get to the track at Blair High School, where I often run; and the Route 1 to get to Friendship Heights for medical appointments.
|
What do you like the most about your Ride On experiences?
I like the fact that the 12 and 15 (and 19) stop just 150 feet from my house—which is partly why I chose to live where I do. I also like that the buses I ride usually follow the schedules pretty closely and are not often late. Finally, I like the audio announcements of the next stop so I don’t miss my stop, and that these are usually loud enough to hear over the other noise on a bus.
How has Ride On changed over the years from a rider’s perspective?
I really have not noticed many changes since I started riding, at least not on the routes that I regularly use. Probably the biggest change in my time here has been the construction of the Silver Spring Transit Center, which of course has changed the experience of catching the bus and getting from the bus to the Red Line in Silver Spring.
What other family members use the Ride On system and for what purposes?
Over the years, I have often taken my daughter on Ride On to get to downtown Silver Spring or to the Long Branch pool. Now she’s in high school, and still sometimes rides the buses to the Silver Spring Transit Center or to Blair High School.
What recommendations do you have for Ride On?
I’d like the interior of the buses to be a little more brightly lit at night. I have a visual impairment—which is why I ride the buses so often—and in the dark it can be hard for me to get around the bus or even see which seats are already occupied. I don’t know if this is a feasible change, since it likely only affects a small portion of riders. But I have noticed that the interior of Metro buses are better lit and I have an easier time when riding those buses at night.
How do you view your role as a Transit Advisory Group (TAG) member?
I think I can provide an independent, objective perspective on what is working well with Ride On and what could be improved. I hope I can provide the perspective not just of a single rider, but also represent the experience of riders with visual impairments—an important segment of Ride On’s ridership.
What have you learned the most as a TAG member?
I have only joined the TAG in the last couple of months, so I haven’t learned so much yet. I was glad to get the early notification about the Trip Planner app, and have started to test that out with planning my trips.

Federal Transit Administration Grant Supports Ride On Conversion to Electric Bus Fleet
Ride On has received more than $20 million in grants from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez visited the Ride On Brookeville, Silver Spring Depot to feature our Zero-emission buses and Smart Energy Microgrid bus charging infrastructure in an informational video. The video highlights how, with the support of the FTA, we are transitioning to a clean and green bus program powered by solar micro-grid technologies. Ride On has 14 electric buses in service with 60 more on the way.
The Zero-emission bus grants include millions of dollars in funding for workforce programs.
