Montgomery County releases Climate Action Plan quarter update!

Montgomery County has released the second-quarter update of its Fiscal Year 2023 Climate Work Plan, highlighting ongoing work on the County’s Climate Action Plan. In the second quarter of FY23, the County made progress on more than 50 actions to help reach the goals of the plan. The Climate Action Plan (CAP), unveiled in 2021, is a strategic plan to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80 percent by 2027 and 100 percent by 2035. The quarterly progress report summarizes the efforts undertaken by County departments and agencies to implement the CAP through innovative and collaborative projects in clean energy, building, transportation, carbon sequestration, climate adaptation, climate governance, public engagement, and zero waste. Climate Stories Ambassadors contribute their "grain of sand" at film festival last week

Climate Stories Film Festival

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Latino Health Initiative (LHI) hosted the “Climate Stories Film Festival: Our Grain of Sand” at the AFI Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring on February 23. The event, presented in English and Spanish, highlighted the Climate Stories Ambassadors Initiative in which County Climate Stories Ambassadors developed, recorded and shared stories of climate change. Locally, the initiative has resulted in the collection of more than 100 stories that capture residents’ voices, their emotional responses to the changing climate and their commitment to building a more positive future. The County hopes to build on the ambassadors’ leadership and momentum to drive broad-based climate action and tap into residents’ experiences and concerns to co-create climate solutions. Montgomery County received the data from this campaign in the Fall of 2022 and has been hard at work creating an interactive StoryMap that explains the methodology, shows results from the heat mapping, and highlights solutions and next steps the County is taking against extreme heat.
