December 2022

My New Role as Council President

Thank you to the Montgomery County voters for honoring me with the privilege to serve this incredible county for another term. I also want to thank my colleagues for electing me to serve as Council president for the next year. I am honored to serve as Council president and work with all of my colleagues to tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities ahead.

As Council president, my promise is to work collaboratively to push forward equitable policies, ensure that our most vulnerable neighbors are healthy, safe and housed, and set us up for long-term economic success. From addressing housing stability to traffic safety, to putting forward clean energy initiatives and ensuring our economy is open for innovation and business, I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work.

Inauguration of 20th Council

Last week, the 20th County Council of Montgomery County, was sworn into office. I’m thrilled to be a part of the most diverse and representative Council body in our county’s history. This new Council also includes six women–the largest number of women ever to serve on the Council. When I first introduced the charter amendment to expand the Council from nine to 11 members, I did so because we needed a Council to reflect the diversity of our community. The result has exceeded my expectations!

I’m proud to continue my service on the Council alongside Councilmembers Gabe Albornoz, Andrew Friedson, Will Jawando and Sidney Katz, and excited to welcome Councilmembers Marilyn Balcombe, Natali Fani-González, Dawn Luedtke, Kristin Mink, Laurie-Anne Sayles and Kate Stewart. I look forward to working with this great group to move Montgomery County forward.

Community Forum on Anti-Semitism

Join me and other panelists tonight, December 14, at 7 p.m. at Temple Emanuel in Kensington for a discussion on the rise in anti-Semitism. Incidents of harassment, vandalism and violence against people of Jewish faith are at their highest levels since the 1970s. We have an obligation to call out anti-Semitism whenever we see it.

I am committed to ending the spread of hate, bigotry, and harassment and look forward to engaging in this conversation. We must ensure that Montgomery County is a safe and welcoming place for all of our residents.

If you are interested in participating, please join us in person at 7 p.m.

The Season of Giving

There's no better way to embrace the holiday spirit than by making a donation or volunteering your time to a local nonprofit. From the arts and education to healthcare, food relief, housing, and more, our diverse nonprofits add so much richness and value to our community and help so many. Our local nonprofits are also a key sector of our economy and provide thousands of jobs across the region.

Support a local nonprofit this holiday season and learn more about volunteer opportunities through Montgomery County’s Volunteer Center.

World AIDS Day

I had the honor of participating in the 2nd Annual Solidarity for Health Breakfast hosted by Montgomery County HIV/STI Services and the Montgomery County (MD) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Over the past five years, Black women in Montgomery County have been diagnosed with HIV at a faster rate than any other demographic. Montgomery County has a goal of reducing new HIV infections by 75% over the next three years, and a 90% reduction by 2030.

Please get tested and encourage others to get tested so everyone knows their status and, together, we can end the stigma and end the spread of HIV. Free rapid HIV tests are available at the Dennis Avenue Health Center. Make an appointment by calling 240-777-1760 and find more information on the Department of Health and Human Services webpage.

Managing Your Mental Health Around The Holidays

The holiday season can be a difficult time of year for many of us. As we face the third holiday season since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, more people will be feeling anxious for the holidays or grieving loved ones during this time. It is imperative to prioritize your mental health during the hectic holiday season. A few tips include maintaining healthy habits, like sleep schedules and exercise routines, reaching out to support networks if you feel isolated and taking time for yourself. Find a full list of tips to maintain your mental health this holiday season. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 immediately or call the County’s 24-hour Crisis Center at 240-777-4000.

Constituent Corner

My office received a call from a constituent in Silver Spring who – for years – has been asking her landlord to fix a broken oven in her apartment. On her behalf, we contacted the Department of Housing and Community Affairs (DHCA)’s code enforcement manager, and the constituent received a new oven this past week – just in time for the holidays.

As always, please reach out to me about any issue you may have. Email me at Councilmember.Glass@montgomerycountymd.gov or you can call my office at (240) 777-7966.

Did You Know..?

Montgomery County is celebrating its annual Gift Outside the Box campaign, which encourages people to “gift-greener” this holiday season. The annual campaign promotes environmentally friendly gift-giving and gifting experiences, such as music lessons, recreation classes or event tickets as well as focusing on gifting reusable items such as water bottles, metal straws and cloth napkins, and reducing the use of wrapping paper. And you can support county and state businesses by purchasing locally made products–look for the “MoCo Made” label at Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) or other retail stores. Learn more about the Gift Outside the Box campaign and how you can participate in greener gift-giving this year.

Glass@montgomerycountymd.gov或致电 (240) 777-7966 联系我的办公室。
