Electric Ride-on Bus

Electric Ride On and MCPS school buses hit the road

Get ready for a cleaner, quieter ride to school and work! This month, there were two major announcements about electric buses in Montgomery County.

  • Montgomery County Public School celebrated the largest school bus electrification project in the country, announcing that a total of 86 electric buses will be in operation this school year, operating out of 4 transportation depots.
  • The Department of Transportation also celebrated the ribbon cutting for the 6.5 megawatt Brookeville Bus Depot Microgrid, with solar PV canopies, on-site gas generator, and battery storage that can provide charging capacity for 70 buses. MCDOT has 14 all-electric Ride On buses in operation with more on order.
  • Both projects use an innovative Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) financing model that required no up-front capital expenditures. Highland Electric Fleets is the service provider for MCPS' school buses, and AlphaStruxure designed, built, and will operate the Brookeville Microgrid.
