Friends,

The 2022 Gubernatorial General Election takes place this Tuesday, November 8th. Elections are our chance to have an impact on the issues that affect us, our families, our community, and our future. Moreover, there are many local races to be decided in this election, including races to elect Montgomery County's first 11-member County Council!

  • The Council presented two proclamations: 1) Recognizing Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month; and 2) Celebrating Veteran's Day.

    • WSSC Water’s spending control limits process was established in April 1994 via resolution.
    • There are four limits: New Debt, Debt Service, Water and Sewer Operating Expenses, and Maximum Rate Increase.
  • The Council held a worksession about Bill 26-22, Landlord-Tenant Relations - Radon Testing and Mitigation - Required. I am a co-sponsor of this bill.
    • This bill would require radon testing in rental housing & require disclosure and mitigation of radon hazards above a certain action level.

  • The Council unanimously passed a resolution to address and combat antisemitism.
    • The resolution affirms the non-binding International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s Working Definition of
Antisemitism as an educational tool and reaffirms the County’s commitment to combat antisemitism, discrimination, and hate.

PUBLIC SAFETY AND GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS COMMITTEES

I am proud to be the Chair of the Public Safety (PS) Committee and a member of the Government Operations (GO) Committee.

  • The Public Safety committee met to discuss Expedited Bill 21-22, Weapons- Firearms in or Near Places of Public Assembly.
    • The bill would prohibit the possession of firearms in or near places of public assembly, with certain exemptions, and remove an exemption that allows individuals with certain handgun permits to possess handguns within 100 yards of a place of public assembly. View Staff Report.

DISTRICT 3 HISTORIC NOTE

Summit Hall Farm Smokehouse

This outbuilding located on the ridge of Summit Hall Farm is treasured as the oldest complete historic structure within the City of Gaithersburg. Historically known as the Smokehouse, its notched logs and chinked mortar serve as a modern day reminder of the early settlement of Log Town.

The Smokehouse is approximately 14 feet square and rests on a fieldstone base. The roof was originally covered with rough wood shakes which have been replaced with machine cut wooden shingles. The short wide door on the east façade is made from three wide planks nailed to two interior horizontal members. The door was originally designed with a loop leather hinge and peg salt-resistant iron hinge system, but is presently mounted with wide triangular iron strap hinges.

In 1990, the City of Gaithersburg commissioned Dell Corporation to make restoration repairs to this important historic landmark.
