Friends,

Fall is a great time of the year to explore and enjoy outdoor festivities in Montgomery County. Several outdoor events such as pumpkin festivals, movies under the stars, and Yappy Hours feature food, music, and cultural activities. Here is an event calendar of fun upcoming activities - Visit Montgomery.

COUNCIL NEWS

At the County Council this week -

  • The Council presented a Proclamation recognizing World Homeless Day. View Proclamation
  • The Council held its ninth annual Hispanic Heritage Month commemoration to honor local leaders and celebrate important initiatives that affect the County's Latino community. The theme of this year’s commemoration was “Latinas: Leadership Without Borders,” and included a special video program and Council proclamation. View Commemoration.
  • The Council held a wrap-up work session for Thrive Montgomery 2050 to discuss Executive Branch comments on the Planning, Housing, and Economic Development (PHED) Committee Draft of Thrive 2050, and to follow up on Council requests made during the review of the three new chapters to the plan. View Staff Report.
    • Thrive sets a vision for the County and encompasses broad, County-wide policy recommendations for land use, zoning, housing, equity, transportation, and parks/open space.

PUBLIC SAFETY AND GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS COMMITTEES

I am proud to be the Chair of the Public Safety (PS) Committee and a member of the Government Operations (GO) Committee.

  • The Public Safety committee received a briefing and update about crime statistics, including violent crimes and discussed Bill 17-21, Police – Community Informed Police Training.
    • This bill would require the Police Department to collaborate with local educational partners regarding police cadet recruitment and police training and provide for the continuing education of police officers.
  • The GO committee met to discuss Bill 23-22, Personnel and Human Resources – Pension Amount – Group G (fire and rescue employees).
    • This bill would increase the pension amount for Group G members and generally revise County law regarding pension at retirement.

KATZ IN THE COMMUNITY

kk

I had the pleasure of attending the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Montgomery County’s (NAMI MC) 21st Annual Heroes Celebration, “Together for Mental Health." This event gathered over 200 of our community's leaders, mental healthcare providers, people impacted by mental illness, and community allies to recognize the importance of mental health awareness. The organization's mission is to build communities of peers to provide support, education, & advocacy for all affected by mental illness.

The Belt Building

In July of 1889, John A. Belt, a leading merchant in Gaithersburg, purchased the southwest corner of Diamond and Summit Avenues for $200. On this site, Belt built a general store with a large upstairs public room, known as Norman Hall. The building soon became a pivotal structure in Gaithersburg's social, cultural and governmental activities. Norman Hall began its first functions as Post Office, Town Hall, and Polling Place. It was not long before it became the social and cultural center of Gaithersburg as well as housing the town's first library.

The Belt Building's Norman Hall became the preferred location of theater, lectures, recitals, musical presentations, and high school graduations. At the turn of the century, the original building was tragically destroyed by fire. It was soon replaced with the present brick structure, constructed in 1903. The Belt Building has been home to many businesses, including W. Lawson King's Auto Showroom, George Woodfield's Maytag Service, Walker's Grocery, Frank Ciarrachi's Restaurant, Clark's Photography, MacMurray's Floral Arts, Armand's Pizzeria, and most recently, Old Town Tavern and Summit Station.
