Katz Update: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

banner

October 7, 2022

Friends,

As Chair of the Public Safety Committee and former Chair of the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, I am proud to recognize the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

During October, the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council is displaying stories from domestic violence victims/survivors who live in Montgomery County, along with pairs of shoes (showcasing their "Walk in their Shoes" campaign) representing each victim. These stories are shared to highlight the prevalence of domestic violence in our community and how to recognize the signs of domestic violence. The displays can be found at our County's Libraries, Recreation Centers, Police Stations and other sites including Courthouses, the State’s Attorney’s Office, and the Trauma Services Center.

It was a pleasure to attend the official Launch Party for the Gaithersburg Financial Empowerment Center.  The Center offers professional, one-on-one financial counseling and coaching as a free public service for City of Gaithersburg residents.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, I had the privilege of joining County Executive Marc Elrich with Margarita and Andy Womack at Maspanadas. Maspanadas meaning ‘more empanadas’ is a local, Rockville establishment that is a family run business with Latin roots engrained in their products of empanadas.

DISTRICT 3 HISTORIC NOTE

Vivian V. Simpson, one of the original tenants of the Suburban Trust building at 255 North Washington Street, was an exceptional woman whose story illustrates how one woman fought for equality and overcame gender barriers in the male-dominated world of law and politics in Maryland. Simpson’s many accomplishments include first woman lawyer in Montgomery County, opening a solo practice in Rockville, first female attorney for the Board of County Commissioners in Montgomery County (now County Council), first woman president of the Bar Association of Montgomery County and first female Secretary of the State of Maryland.
