This week marked another critical milestone in our fight against COVID-19, with children between ages 5-11 now able to be vaccinated. My wife and I are thrilled and relieved that all of our children are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine and we will be registering them as soon as possible.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently granted full approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 years of age. Following this long-awaited authorization, Montgomery County can now begin vaccinating children in this age group.

The County’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in partnership with the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) began vaccinating children in this age group in our County-operated clinics this week, however appointments are required. Children in this particular age group, will receive two doses of the Pfizer vaccine, three weeks apart. The pediatric vaccine is specially packaged and is it not interchangeable with the Pfizer used for first, second and booster doses for those older than 12 years of age.

This vaccine will also be made available to local pharmacies, private pediatricians, and retailers such as CVS, Giant, Safeway, and Walgreens to make the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine accessible to the thousands of children, between 5-11 years of age, in need of a COVID-19 vaccination.
