banner

January 22, 2021

Friends,

This week we watched the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris is the first woman and person of color to serve as Vice President. It was a historical day with flags waving and people cheering (many from their homes) as we witnessed the 46th President sworn in to lead our country. Like you, I look forward to this new and exciting chapter for America!

COUNCIL NEWS

At the County Council this week -

  • The Council presented a proclamation to celebrate David Gamse’s retirement as CEO from the Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA). Gamse served as CEO since 1990 for JCA, an amazing community partner located in Rockville.
  • The Council interviewed the County Executive's appointment for Deputy Director of the Department of Transportation (DOT) - Hannah Henn. Ms. Henn brings an extraordinary amount of past experience to the DOT.
  • The Council introduced Bill 5-21, Agricultural Land Preservation – Solar Collection System. This bill would dedicate business personal property tax revenue received for a solar collection system constructed in the Agricultural Reserve Zone for the Agricultural Land Preservation Fund.
  • The Council hosted a virtual Town Hall to answer your questions on the Covid-19 vaccination. We received over 2,200 registrations for this event! Some information provided included the vaccine rollout plan in our County and priority order for vaccinations mandated by the state government. Please click on this link for the Town Hall - Power Point Presentation.

PUBLIC SAFETY AND GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS COMMITTEES

I am proud to be the Chair of the Public Safety (PS) Committee and a member of the Government Operations (GO) Committee.

  • The PS Committee held a worksession to discuss Bill 45-20, Community Policing - Data. I am happy to sponsor this bill which would require the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) to make certain reports and post certain datasets regarding community information on Data Montgomery.

Here is the latest information on the COVID-19 Vaccine for Montgomery County:

  • Montgomery County will schedule clinics when it has vaccines on-hand; however, each week we are only given 2 to 3 days’ notice about the amount and the delivery date of the doses for that week, and we cannot schedule clinics until that information is known.
  • On a weekly basis, Montgomery County has received an avg. of 7,500 doses.
    • Montgomery County has used 92% of the vaccine to reach those in the first priority group (1A), which includes frontline health care workers NOT affiliated with a hospital and public safety staff.
    • Montgomery County is coordinating with local hospitals to explore distributing any additional vaccine they have available.

DISTRICT 3 HISTORICAL NOTE

Reuben Hill House - 305 Lincoln Avenue, Rockville

The community of Lincoln Park grew around the Reuben Hill House. In 1891, William Wallace Welsh, owner of the General Store, purchased 8 acres of land and laid out thirty-one lots on 2 blocks on either side of Lincoln Avenue as building sites for sale to African Americans. The eastern boundary of the subdivision of Lincoln Park bordered 305 Lincoln Avenue. The Reuben Hill House has passed out of the hands of descendants, but its distinctive vernacular architecture still speaks to black history in early Rockville.
