The coronavirus pandemic is transforming our lives hour by hour, as we struggle to cope with so many upheavals in our daily routines. As of today, Maryland has seen 1,985 confirmed cases statewide with 447 of those in Montgomery County.
Even though these can be scary times, it’s been an inspiration to see so many people in our community and across the world pull together to support one another. Our community will get through this if we stay connected. That's why I am hosting weekly town halls on Monday evenings at 7pm. Read below about our first digital town hall last Monday. RSVP for our next digital town hall on Monday, April 6.
As we continue to monitor and respond to this crisis, I encourage you to raise questions and stay connected. Please do not hesitate to contact my office at 240-777-7960 or tom.hucker@montgomerycountymd.gov. My colleagues and I are working around the clock to serve you however we can.
Sincerely,
|
Tom Hucker Vice President Montgomery County Council
P.S. Please sign-up here if you want a notice from my office as soon as the application for the emergency grants program is available.

"The County Council unanimously passed a series of measures designed to respond to the pandemic Tuesday, following D.C.’s lead in opting to offer cash assistance for companies struggling to stay afloat. Small businesses with 100 employees or fewer will now be able to apply to earn checks of up to $75,000 from the county’s new “Public Health Emergency Grant Program.” A quarter of the funding pool will be reserved for restaurants and retailers, a change advanced by Councilman Tom Hucker, D-Silver Spring, to reach businesses that have been forced to shut down after Gov. Larry Hogan’s stay-at-home order." Read the full article here.

Governor Hogan has implemented a Stay at Home Executive Order for Marylanders. Following this order will save lives by slowing the rapid spread of the coronavirus and conserving vital resources. Residents are only permitted to leave their home for an essential reason (see guidance below). Violating the order could result in imprisonment up to one year and/or a fine up to $5,000. On March 31st, Dr. Travis Gayles and Earl Stoddard briefed the Council about the County's confirmed COVID-19 cases, testing protocols, surge planning, volunteers, and more. Listen to the briefing here. |

County Council passes vaping protections
The Council passed new common-sense legislation to regulate vaping and bring the county into line with existing state law. These laws will help protect our teenagers from the growing epidemic of vaping, which threatens to produce a generation of nicotine addicts.
