Council President's Update: Jan. 27, 2020

Sidney Katz Banner

Dear Resident,

Let’s take a look at what is coming up this week at the Montgomery County Council.

At Tuesday’s 9:30 a.m. Council meeting, I will present a proclamation recognizing the Lunar New Year. On behalf of the Council, I wish all Montgomery County residents who celebrate this holiday a wonderful and prosperous new year.

At 1:30 p.m. the Council will hold a public hearing on the spending affordability guidelines for this year's operating budget. These guidelines set the parameters for the overall operating budget by setting the ceiling on property tax revenues and the  operating budget. Any operating budget that exceeds the guidelines requires the affirmative vote of seven Councilmembers. The Council must adopt these guidelines by the second Tuesday in February.

Following this public hearing, we will receive a briefing on the County’s Vision Zero plan for pedestrian and bicycle safety, which aims to eliminate fatalities and severe injuries on County roads by 2030. This meeting was put together in response to the recent pedestrian tragedies that have occured in 2020. One of the Council’s top priorities is creating safe, walkable communities in our County, and we need to ensure that the needs of pedestrians and bicyclists are addressed. I and other County leaders are committed to continuously reevaluating what we are doing in this area and providing the necessary resources for improvements. We will be joined by representatives from the Maryland State Highway Administration, Montgomery County’s Department of Transportation, the Montgomery County Police Department, Montgomery County Park and Planning and Montgomery County Public Schools. This is a topic of utmost importance, and we look forward to a thorough and productive discussion.

We also will discuss the Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills Sector Plan, which reevaluates land use and transportation strategies as part of a long-term visioning process for the area. Topics to be discussed include traffic congestion standards, intersection improvements and public school adequacy, among others. You can read more here and here

You can see everything on the Council’s and our six Committees’ agendas, find Council staff reports and stream Council and Committee meetings here. Check out our Council Coming Attractions for a preview of what’s in store at the Council.

Finally, I would like to remind you that if your kids don’t have dental insurance and are in need of care, you can sign up for a free dental clinic on February 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Click here or call Christina or Jessie at (301) 515-0030 for more information.

Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful week.

Kind regards,

Council President Sidney Katz
