Council President's Update: Dec. 3, 2019

Sidney Katz Banner

Dear Resident,

It is my honor to serve as the new president of the Montgomery County Council. This morning I was elected unanimously by my colleagues to serve a one-year term as Council president. Councilmember Tom Hucker, who represents District 5, was elected as Council vice president. I would like to thank Councilmember Nancy Navarro for her excellent leadership as Council president in 2019. Here is a clip from this morning’s election of officers.

I have several chief priorities for the year ahead. These include continuing to make Montgomery County more business friendly and generating employment opportunities that bring well-paying jobs to the County. I hope to build on my joint 4Business initiative with County Executive Marc Elrich, which aims to engage the local business community in a grassroots campaign to assist businesses to locate, grow and prosper in Montgomery County. I am also proud that we at the Council have adopted a new County Economic Development Platform that emphasizes innovation, sustainability and diversity in the investments we as a County make in our economy. As president I will continue to work with our local business community and with businesses that would like to relocate here. A strong economy and growing tax base are the foundations upon which a thriving community is built and sustained.

Other key areas of focus include continuing to prioritize support for Montgomery County Public Schools in our yearly budget process and doing everything we can to help ensure students in our County receive the best education possible. I will also look to support efforts to enhance multimodal transportation solutions in Montgomery County so that we can reduce congestion and enhance traffic safety and pedestrian safety.

Throughout the year I will use this newsletter to keep you informed of the Council’s legislative and budget efforts, our outreach and activities in the community, and how you can stay involved. You can see what’s on the Council’s and our six Committees’ agenda, find Council staff reports and stream Council and Committee meetings here. Each week, our Council Coming Attractions provides a preview of what’s in store at the Council. You can sign up to testify at Council public hearings here. Finally, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

I look forward to what is sure to be an exciting year ahead!

Warm regards,

Council President Sidney Katz
