County Executive, Council to Join Opioid Intervention Team (OIT) Members to Provide Update on Progress Made in Addressing Opioid Crisis in County; Unveil Interactive Art Exhibit Highlighting Addiction

County Executive Marc Elrich will be joined by Councilmembers, Health and Human Services Director Raymond Crowel and Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director Earl Stoddard, co-chairs of the County’s Opioid Intervention Team; along with and Acting Police Chief Marcus Jones; Fire Chief Scott Goldstein; State’s Attorney John McCarthy and Sheriff Darren Popkin to provide an update on the opioid crisis in Montgomery County.  Speakers will provide an overview of the progress made by the OIT in addressing the issue.  

From January through June of 2019, there were 37 opioid related deaths in Montgomery County. 

A multidimensional, interactive art exhibit by Bethesda artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg will be unveiled and will be displayed through the end of October.  The exhibit, part of her Empty Fix effort, is designed to explore the roots of addiction. 

Note to editors:  There will be opportunities to interview an individual in recovery from opioid addiction and an individual working as a peer recovery specialist.
