September 20, 2019

I am honored to represent District 3 on the Montgomery County Council.  I serve as Vice President for the Council, Chair of the Public Safety Committee and a member of the Government Operations Committee.

Council News

At the September 17th Council Session:

  • I presented a proclamation with my colleague Councilmember Craig Rice recognizing Constitution Week. This week is the commemoration of America's most important document. It is celebrated annually during the week of September 17-23.
  • The Council introduced Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) 19-06, Vape Shops. I am proud to be a co-sponsor. This ZTA would prohibit vape shops that sell e-cigarettes from opening within half a mile of a middle or high school. It also would prohibit vape shops from allowing access to people under 21 years of age.

Public Safety Committee (PS)

  • The PS Committee met jointly with the Health & Human Services (HHS) Committee on September 19th to receive a briefing about Behavioral/Mental Health Services in the Juvenile Justice System. We held a substantive discussion on this important issue.

Government Operations Committee (GO)

  • The GO Committee met jointly with the Planning, Housing, and Economic Development (PHED) Committee on September 16th to discuss the Declaration of No Further Need - Disposition of Land on Hawkins Creamery Road.

Katz in the Community

EveryMind

I had a great time at the EveryMind 4th Annual Run/Walk in Rockville!! It was a perfect day to be outside and exercise for a good cause. EveryMind raises awareness of the importance of mental health wellness and reduces the stigma that is associated with mental health challenges.

Moms Demand Action

I attended a Moms Demand Action School Safety meeting with about 125 parents, teachers, students, and elected officials. It was interesting to learn what research shows will keep students safer from gun violence. This group seeks common-sense, middle-ground solutions to the escalating problem of gun violence in America.

Fire Ops 101 with the Department of Fire & Rescue Services (DFRS) was fantastic (that's me on the right). The training was incredibly challenging and informative. Thanks to DFRS for letting us "walk in your boots"!!

Farmers Bureau

Congratulations to the Montgomery County Farm Bureau on receiving a proclamation in honor of their 100 year Anniversary. The Farm Bureau does incredible work to promote and protect the rural landscape and natural resources of our beautiful county.
