I am honored to represent District 3 on the Montgomery County Council. I serve as Chair of the Public Safety Committee and as a member of the Government Operations Committee.
Latest News from the County Council
At the July 16th Council Session:
- I had the pleasure of presenting a Proclamation recognizing Peace Day. This day celebrates the birthday and legacy of late teen poet and peace activist Mattie J.T. Stepanek. He was a respected poet and award-winning peace activist by the time he died, three weeks before his 14th birthday.
- It was an honor to present a Proclamation to recognize lifeguard Marisa Arnold's quick actions to save a young child. Marisa, a recent Quince Orchard High School graduate, remained calm in a very stressful situation as she saved the life of a four-year-old boy at Stonebridge Community Pool in Gaithersburg.
- The County Council confirmed Jennifer Bryant, the County Executive's appointee for Office of Management and Budget, Deputy Director for Results. Ms. Bryant served as a Budget Manager for nearly six years with the Montgomery County Government.
- The County Council interviewed the County Executive's appointee Berke Attila for the Department of Human Resources Director position. The County Council interviews and votes on all County Executive appointees.
Government Operations Committee (GO)
The GO Committee discussed the community grants process. This was a joint committee meeting with the Health & Human Services (HHS) Committee.

It was great to attend the 24th Annual Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce Public Safety Awards. The ceremony was held at the Montgomery County Agricultural Center in Gaithersburg. This was an opportunity for the business community to thank our outstanding public safety officials.

Congratulations to the 2019 STARTALK graduates who enrolled in a stem-integrated Chinese learning summer program. The graduation was hosted by the Huayuan Chinese Academy and took place at Rosemont Elementary School in Gaithersburg. Dr. Alan Cheung (pictured) is the Program Director.

I celebrated Peace Day in Rockville over the weekend. We celebrated the life of peace activist Mattie J.T. Stepanek. There was cake, a moon bounce, community conversation, face painting, arts and crafts and entertainment. Live performances included The Black & Tan Band, David Roth and The Zamdancers.

Here I am with Captain Paul Starks at his retirement party. Captain Starks served the Police Department for almost 35 years. He served with distinction and we will miss him greatly!

Calling All College Students!
The Katz office is seeking 12 students interested in local government and politics for its 2019 - 2020 Student Advisory Group (SAG). This group is open to any college student either living in District 3 or attending Montgomery College or the Universities of Shady Grove. SAG meets once every two months in the evening to advise me about public policies important to our students. Saturday, July 20, 2019: Rockville Farmers Market is a grower/producer only market held at the Jury Lot in Rockville (East Jefferson Street and Monroe Street). Vendors sell fresh fruit, veggies, cheeses, pastries and more. 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. More info - Rockville Farmers Market.
Sunday, July 21, 2019: Ride the Rockville Pike Bike Beltway starting at Thomas Farm Community Center (700 Fallsgrove Dr. in Rockville). This shared-use path is a 10.6-mile loop known as Rockville’s bike beltway. Rain at start cancels the ride; wet pavement does not. 10:00 am. More info - Ride the Rockville Pike Beltway.
Tuesday, July 23, 2019: Yoga in the Park at the Concert Pavilion (31 South Summit Ave. in Gaithersburg). Bring your mat, towel and water for a relaxing hour of yoga. 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. More info - Yoga in the Park.
Tuesday, July 23, 2019: Join the Rockville Bicycle Advisory Committee for a casual neighborhood ride for about one-hour. Meet at Westat Parking Lot (1450 Research Blvd. in Rockville). 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. More info. - Bike Ride.
