Montgomery County Public Libraries to Offer Reading Opportunities through the Grandreaders Program
Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL), in partnership with the Jewish Council for the Aging, Heyman Interages Center, is offering the Grandreaders Program at several branches this summer. Grandreaders is a free, one-on-one, intergenerational literacy program, which pairs up a Grandreader volunteer with a child from kindergarten through third grade to practice reading aloud.
“This literacy program is designed to improve elementary students' ability to read more fluently and with better comprehension” said Anita Vassallo, MCPL acting director. “This is a great opportunity for children to keep their reading skills sharp during the summer and be more prepared when they return to school. We are delighted to be able to offer this program at our public libraries – as part of MCPL mission in assisting families in readying their children to succeed at home and at school.”
The Grandreaders Program will run through Aug. 5 at select branches:
- Rockville Memorial, Mondays, 10 to 11 a.m.
- Aspen Hill, Wednesdays, 10 to 11 a.m.
- Gaithersburg, Thursdays, 2 to 3 p.m.
No registration is required. Participants may bring their own book or select one from the library.
