Latest News from the County Council

At the July 9th Council Session, the Montgomery County Council:

  • Received an invocation from Rabbi Michael Safra from B'Nai Israel Congregation in Rockville.  Founded in 1925, B’nai Israel has been a major presence in our District 3 faith community for generations.  The County Council session starts with words of wisdom from various clergy members in our County.
  • Presented a Proclamation recognizing National Parks and Recreation Month which is in July.  Take advantage of the 421 parks, 303 athletic fields and 290 playgrounds in our County.  This is great time to visit parks and enjoy the outdoors with the entire family.
  • Discussed Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA) 19-01, Accessory Residential Uses - Accessory Apartments during a second work session at the County Council.  Action on this ZTA is tentatively scheduled for 7/23/19.  The goal of this zoning change is to streamline the process for having an accessory apartment and to help increase the supply of affordable housing.
  • Received a briefing on the County Executive’s proposal for a two-year (biennial) operating budget.  Currently, an operating budget for the County is adopted every fiscal year.

Government Operations Committee (GO)

  • The GO Committee received an update from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) and the Office of Internal Audit (OIA).  The OIG serves as a public watchdog to detect and prevent fraud, waste and abuse in government activities.  The OIA provides independent risk-based auditing services.
