I'm humbled to represent District 1 on the Montgomery County Council. This is a special community, and the only place I've ever called home. We have much work to do to maintain our high quality of life and to make it possible for everyone to enjoy it, but together, our long-term possibilities extend far beyond our near-term problems. Now more than ever, local government matters, impacting what happens on our streets, in our schools, and with the businesses and jobs that sustain our livelihoods. I'm here to dig in, to solve problems collectively, and to make progress, for you, and for our community.

I spent Wednesday – my second full day in office – with resident, business, and government leaders for a downtown Bethesda walk focused on every day quality of life issues. Ensuring world-class constituent service and improving our quality of life are the lifeblood of local government, and will be my primary focus areas to begin my tenure on the County Council.
Progress is being made when it comes to improving pedestrian safety, mitigating construction impacts, and other related issues – but I know we can do better by working together. This on-the-ground look at specific problem areas allowed us to discuss potential solutions in a hands-on, collaborative way. Some will require long-term, systemic changes. Others we can address right away. We will be following up on each and every item identified during the walking tour with the appropriate agencies and individuals. As always, my goal is to bring the Council to the community, so I welcome your thoughts and suggestions for similar issues that require attention.

There is nothing more important than ensuring a sustainable future for our county. That means forward-looking land-use policies that balance the needs of our families, our environment, and our local businesses, and modernizing county services so we can afford to maintain our high quality of life and keep up with our growing needs. I am thrilled to be joining the Planning, Housing, and Economic Development (PHED) Committee and Government Operations and Fiscal (GO) Committee. On PHED, we will deal with the land-use, affordable housing, and business issues that are critical to our community. On GO, I will be able to bring my background in fiscal and economic policy and restructuring large public agencies to ensure transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility, and make Montgomery County more efficient, effective, and responsive.
