When temperatures drop
precipitously, water main breaks occur more frequently. The Washington Suburban
Sanitary Commission (WSSC) encourages customers to report a suspected broken
water main as soon as possible. It recommends keeping on hand a one-to-two gallon
supply of safe tap or bottled water per person per day for a three-day
