Secretary McCord and Planning Team at the Maryland Complete Count Committee Meeting

On Tuesday, March 3, Secretary Rob McCord, Deputy Secretary Sandy Schrader, Chief of Staff Adam Gruzs, Executive Associate Maria Sofia, and John Watson, Outreach Coordinator, attended the Maryland Complete Count Committee meeting in Crownsville. The committee will meet again on Tuesday, April 14.

Maryland Census Outreach Coordinator Supports Carroll County Training for Community Partners

John Watson, Census Outreach Coordinator, attended the Census Training for Community Partners sessions hosted by the Carroll County Complete Count Committee. Attendees learned about U.S. Census 2020, the new online census form, and how best to provide assistance to the people they serve. Census 2020 Presented at the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce

Randall Nixon, Associate Director for the Maryland Census, gave a presentation to the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce (GBBCC) at Coppin State University on March 4. This meeting was an extended follow-up to a GBBCC meeting in February, in which Secretary Robert McCord made remarks about the importance of the Census message to the minority business community. Nixon emphasized the importance of businesses using Census tools, including information available in the Maryland State Data Center. Business owners can improve profitability by better understanding the demographic, socioeconomic, and housing data in the areas where they operate. Daniel Jones, Partnership Specialist for the U.S. Census Bureau, provided additional information

Maryland's Census 2020 Advertising Campaign to Launch on March 12

Following the U.S. Census Bureau's nationwide awareness media campaign, the state will launch its own campaign. This media plan, with emphasis on the hard to count communities, will launch the week of March 12, which begins the motivation phase of outreach. This coordinated effort will include television and radio spots, billboards, bus signage, and social media.

Harford Count Executive Glassman: Please Participate in the 2020 Census [Letter]

The 2020 Census is coming and you should know it’s important, it’s easy and it’s safe.

Every 10 years, a Census is required by the Constitution to count everyone living in the United States. As Harford County executive, I encourage everyone in our community to participate. The Census affects our representation at all levels of government and determines how billions of dollars in federal funds are allocated for public safety, education, transportation, and other vital services. In other words, these funds improve our quality of life.

People in Transitory Living Situations Will Be Counted in the 2020 Census

People from every generation live in unconventional ways and locations. Some reside at horseracing stables or travel with circuses and carnivals. Others seek more affordable housing in RV parks. Others live on boats, docking at marinas most of the time or between sailing trips, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Historically, counting these people in a Census has been a challenge, but the Census Bureau is determined to include them in the 2020 Census. It has identified places where the transitory population may be on Census Day.

2020 Census Response Rate Map Preview Now Available

The U.S. Census Bureau launched a new online map today as part of its 2020 Census Response Rate Challenge — where state, local, and community leaders work together to promote a complete and accurate count by increasing the self-response rate in their community. The preview map currently displays 2010 Census self-response rates as a reference point for states, counties, cities, and census tracts around the country. Users will be able to use the map to track their community’s progress in responding to the 2020 Census.

Teachers Set to Help Students Learn About 2020 Census

The U.S. Census Bureau and teachers across the nation today kicked off "Statistics in Schools Week: Everyone Counts!"— a nationwide initiative to encourage pre-K-12 educators to help their communities achieve a complete 2020 Census count. During the week of March 2-6, schools and teachers are encouraged to use free classroom resources and activities from the Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools (SIS) program to teach students about the importance of the Census. Census results help determine how many seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and how billions of dollars in federal funds are distributed over the next 10 years to communities for critical public services and infrastructure like emergency response, fire departments, schools, hospitals, roads, and bridges.

Montgomery County Census 2020 Distributes Everyone Counts Flyers in Multiple Languages

Most Americans say they are likely to participate in the 2020 Census, but some doubt that the U.S. Census Bureau will keep their personal information confidential, a new poll shows. The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds 7 in 10 Americans say it's extremely or very likely they will participate in the Census this year by filling out a questionnaire. Another 2 in 10 say it's somewhat likely.

Spatial Mismatch: When Workers Can’t Get to Jobs in the Suburbs

When jobs are far from where the people who need them live, unemployment rates climb. Job sprawl to the suburbs has created a commuting challenge that hits low-income residents the hardest. Many may not be able to afford a car and if access to public transportation is limited, those living in cities cannot take advantage of job opportunities in suburbs miles away. Economists call the gap between where the jobs are and where people live “spatial mismatch,” which can cause high unemployment and longer spells of joblessness for low-income populations.

Carroll County Census Committee Leaving ‘No Stone Unturned,’ With an Eye to Undercounted Groups Including Children

Certain population groups, such as the homeless, are traditionally underrepresented in the U.S. Census. But even those involved with Carroll County’s Census 2020 effort aren’t exactly sure why children younger than 5 also go underreported. “I don’t know how people forget little children that they’re taking care of day in and day out, but they’re an undercounted group,” Lynda Eisenberg, the county’s planning director, told the Board of County Commissioners at its most recent meeting.

Census 2020 Committee Preparing for Count

The Garrett County Complete Count Committee has been working for the last few months to ensure Garrett County is ready for the upcoming Census 2020. The committee is reinforcing the importance of a complete and accurate Census count and their tagline is “Garrett County Counts Because You Do!” The 2020 Census counts every person living in the 50 states, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories and is mandated by the Constitution. Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire—online, by phone, or by mail. This count will mark the first time that residents will be able to respond to the Census online.

How Groups Are 'Pulling Out All the Stops' To Accurately Count People of Color for Census 2020

LANGLEY PARK, Md. — Jonathan Hernandez stood in the doorway one recent evening gripping his tablet and chatting with the woman in apartment 101. Maria Delmi Galdamez took a break from cooking dinner to hear this stranger out. She crossed her arms – and waited. The 22-year-old college student took his cue and quickly explained in Spanish that the federal government plans to count everyone in the country and it’s important she’s not left out.

Grasonville Community Day to Boost Census Count

Resources for schools, housing, the elderly and more are often determined by a community’s population to distribute funding based on the population count in the last Census. In recent years, Grasonville has been under represented in the Census, which is taken every 10 years. To correct this, local officials are working together to host Grasonville Community Day on Saturday, March 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grasonville Community Center. As an added bonus, the first 50 people to check in at the 2020 Census table will receive a Wawa gift card.

Reaching Out to the Young and Mobile to Respond to the 2020 Census

More than half of the 18- to 24-year-olds in the United States live with their parents and will be counted in their parents’ home when the 2020 Census begins this spring. The other 45% of young adults don’t live at home and are considered less likely to respond because they are what the U.S. Census Bureau calls “young and mobile.”

Census Bureau Reaches Highest Recruiting Goals, Begins Selections for Census Takers

The U.S. Census Bureau is beginning its selection process to hire up to 500,000 Census takers for the 2020 Census. “America has answered the call, and is ready to answer the 2020 Census,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “With unemployment rates at historic lows, recruiting is a big challenge. I congratulate our recruitment staff, and our community partners for recruiting more than 2.6 million applicants nationwide.”
