ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Wes Moore today declared May 2024 as Older Marylanders Month, recognizing the contributions of older Marylanders and reaffirming the state’s commitment to serving older adults in our communities.
The governor's proclamation aligns with Older Americans Month, celebrated every May. This year’s theme, "Powered by Connection," focuses on the profound impact that meaningful connections have on the well-being and health of older adults — a relationship underscored by the U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community.
“Creating and sustaining meaningful social connections across multiple generations as we live longer lives has a transformative impact on individuals and communities. It is a net positive gain for society,” said Maryland Department of Aging Secretary Carmel Roques. “By recognizing and nurturing the role that connectedness plays, we can mitigate issues like loneliness, ultimately promoting healthy aging for more Marylanders.”
Older adults play an important role in Maryland communities. The Maryland Department of Aging is marking the occasion by spreading the word about the mental, physical, and emotional health benefits of social connection through professional and personal aging networks across the state and throughout the month.
Communities across Maryland are encouraged to promote opportunities to engage with older adults through cultural activities, recreational programs, and virtual events. Older adults who may be isolated or experiencing loneliness can reach out to local Area Agencies on Aging and Senior Centers for opportunities to join a club, get help, and engage with the community through social, personal enrichment, or volunteer opportunities.
