Latinoland : A Portrait of America's Largest and Least Understood Minority, by Marie Arana
DB120023
A sweeping yet personal overview of the Latino population of America, drawn from interviews and research that emphasizes the diversity and little-known history of our largest and fastest-growing minority. Marie Arana draws on her own experience as the daughter of an American mother and Peruvian father who came to the US at age nine, straddling two worlds, as many Latinos do. LatinoLand unabashedly celebrates Latino resilience and character and shows us why we must understand the fastest-growing minority in America.
The Boy Who Reached for the Stars : A Memoir, by Elio Morillo
DB120204
Elio Morillo's life is abruptly spun out of orbit when economic collapse and personal circumstances compel his mother to flee Ecuador for the United States in search of a better future for her son. His childhood sets into motion a migration that will ultimately carry Elio to the farthest expanse of human endeavor: space. Today, Elio is helping drive human expansion into the solar system and promote the future of human innovation--from AI and robotics to space infrastructure and equitable access.
Too Soon for Adiós, by Annette Chavez Macias
DB121400
No one expects to meet their father at their mother's funeral. But for Gabby Medina, that's exactly what happens. Her dad abandoned her when she was a baby, and now he's back. And he wants to give her a house. Gabby doesn't want the house or him. But she could use the money. So Gabby agrees to take it under two conditions: First, she can sell the house whenever she wants. Second, accepting it doesn't mean she accepts him. After they strike a deal, Gabby hires a contractor in preparation for a quick sale. But as she gets to know the town and these two new men in her life, she learns more about herself than she ever dared to think possible. But is she ready to open herself up to the truth of what happened and the promise of what could be?

Magazines Begin at Your Library!
The theme of this past summer’s reading challenge was Adventure Begins at Your Library. Here at the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Print Disabled (MD LBPD), we had an adventurous summer indeed! Why? Because beginning in Summer 2024, we began circulating audio magazines to our patrons directly from our location in downtown Baltimore.
Our new Magazines on Cartridge (MOC) program is currently in full swing! Previously, our magazine patrons were served by an audio production company in Rockville, Maryland. However, the National Library Service (NLS) recently shifted the distribution of audio magazines to its network libraries throughout the country. As Maryland’s network library, MD LBPD now delivers audio magazines to its patrons throughout the entire state.
If you have been a long-time audio magazine subscriber, we hope that this transition has been seamless. But if you have any issues with your magazine deliveries, we are here to help get things back on track. If you’ve never subscribed to audio magazines, then take a look at what we have to offer at Magazines. There are magazines to suit readers with all sorts of interests, from history and politics to housekeeping and health and from mystery and science fiction to finance and sports. There are even magazines especially for children.
Our patrons may have up to four magazine cartridges checked out at any given time. Each week, we will send another shipment to patrons who have fewer than four cartridges and who have new magazine editions ready for distribution. Please do not forget to return your cartridges after you finish reading them as that is the only way we can continue to send you more magazines.
It has been quite the adventure transitioning our processes to include circulating audio magazines, but it has been an adventure worth the effort. We at MD LBPD look forward to continuing to serve our patrons with books and magazines that delve into new worlds and new ways of thinking, encourage exploration, and just make life a little more fun!
And now that your magazines are coming directly from our location, we can truly say that Magazines Begin at Your Library!
