Maryland,
It’s Day 39 of President Trump’s federal government shutdown – the longest federal government shutdown in American history. The President’s cruelty has plunged hundreds of thousands of Marylanders into deep uncertainty, and in some cases, financial peril.
Maryland is home to over 269,000 federal workers and 160,000 federal contractors. Thousands depend on federal programs, including 680,000 Marylanders who rely on SNAP.
In the long term, no state can fill the gap created by the Trump Administration. But that hasn’t stopped us from doing everything in our power to protect our people.
We’ve worked to get financial support to federal workers who are missing paychecks, made MARC transit service free for federal workers, and rushed resources to food banks so families don’t go hungry and our agriculture sector stays afloat.
Yesterday, I announced three additional actions we’re taking to rush support to Marylanders:
- We’re launching a second round of loans for essential federal employees working without pay. For more information about this loan program, visit mdol.submittable.com/submit.
- Maryland Transit Administration will now offer free rides to federal employees for ALL core transit services. Federal employees should email: mtacharmpass@mta.maryland.gov with “Free Federal Transit” in the subject line to request their pass.
- We’re directing $10 million toward energy assistance for low-income Marylanders.
These steps add to the work we’ve already done over the last several weeks to protect Marylanders.
To learn more about each of the steps we are taking, I encourage you to visit go.md.gov/FederalShutdown.
We will continue to stand in the breach, but the only enduring solution is for the President to make a deal and end the shutdown.
Your Governor, Wes Moore
