Small Biz Bulletin - February 2022

Jimmy Rhee

Message from Special Secretary Rhee

Every February we celebrate Black History Month, an event that has a history of its own thanks to Carter G. Woodson, Ph.D. He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and is known as the "Father of Black History." He illuminated the idea that black history is about more than the subjugation of slavery, and brought awareness to the significant impact African Americans have on the social, political, and economic development of the United States and the world. The advancement of civil rights impacts all of us and Black Americans have been on the frontline. Their fight for social justice and equality has touched many races and cultures. As a beneficiary of their sacrifice, I am deeply grateful. We must not think of African American contributions only during the month of February. We separate it for the purpose of illuminating its importance. It is an American narrative  permanently woven into the fabric of our American culture and should be celebrated ever day.

Annual Business Filings

The Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) recently announced the availability of 2022 annual reports for businesses registered in Maryland. All domestic and foreign business entities must file an annual report or request an extension by April 15, 2022 to maintain their "good standing" status. If your business owns, leases, or uses personal property in Maryland and/or maintains a trader's license with a local unit of government in Maryland, a personal property tax return is also required. The quickest and easiest way to submit these filings is through SDAT’s award-winning Maryland Business Express site. Once received, annual reports filed online are posted the next business day. Businesses that request a two-month filing extension through SDAT's online extension system will have a deadline of June 15, 2022.

Celebrating Black History Month

The Banneker-Douglass Museum is the State of Maryland's official museum of African American heritage. A community-led effort transformed the former Mt. Moriah AME Church building into the current day museum which opened on February 24, 1984. The museum focuses on a community-based approach to building collections and exhibitions. As you plan your celebration of Black History Month throughout February, include a visit to the museum in Annapolis. Admission to the museum is free, however donations are accepted. You can tour at your own pace, or plan a guided tour (for groups of five or more for a tour fee of $5 per person). Visit the Banneker-Douglass Museum website for hours and a list of the current exhibits and special events.
