Small Biz Bulletin - March 2018

Jimmy Rhee

Message from Special Secretary Rhee

We serve Maryland as a coordinating office of Governor Larry Hogan. Under his vision of a shared-services model, the resources of six once distinct units located throughout the state have come together and made a home in Crownsville. We are all very unique, yet its likely you've interacted with one or more of our coordinating partners within the Governor's Office of Children, Community Initiatives, Crime Control & Prevention, Service & Volunteerism, Deaf & Hard of Hearing, and Performance Improvement. Please take a few minutes to explore the wide variety of services offered through the Governor's Coordinating Offices.

New Law Affecting Small Businesses

The Maryland Healthy Working Families Act is now in effect, requiring employers with 15 or more employees to provide paid sick leave and safe leave for certain employees. Employers with 14 or fewer employees must provide unpaid sick and safe leave for certain employees. This legislation was passed by the Maryland General Assembly over the governor's veto. In an effort to help small businesses comply with this onerous legislation, Governor Hogan issued an Executive Order forming the Office of Small Business Regulatory Assistance. You can contact them by email at Click the link below to download a sample employee notice poster in English and/or Spanish.

Small Business Development

Governor's Office Connects Mid-Shore Small Businesses with State Contracting Opportunities

Buyers from various State agencies connected with the small business community in Maryland's Mid-Shore region last week during the Ready, Set, GROW! Procurement Connections Workshop held at Chesapeake College. This was the first time we held the workshop in that region and attendance exceeded our expectations. Nearly 90 small business owners and entrepreneurs joined us to learn how to navigate the procurement process and meet with buyers from six State agencies. We host our Ready, Set, GROW! workshops at locations around the state and will be at MGM National Harbor in March. Visit the home page of our website and sign up in the "Stay Connected" box to receive email notices of all our free workshops and training events.
