As we enter the holiday season, we’re reminded that caring for our environment is a year-round commitment.Â
From preparing our favorite holiday meals to shopping for loved ones and gathering with family and friends, we can celebrate while being mindful of the resources we use and the waste we create.
Here are three simple ways to make your holiday season more sustainable:
Reduce Food Waste: Plan your meals and make a shopping list before heading to the grocery store. Prepare what you need, share leftovers with guests, and compost food scraps when possible.
Choose Reusables: Skip single-use plates and utensils in favor of reusable dinnerware and cloth napkins. Bring reusable shopping bags when you shop. These simple swaps reduce waste and help keep litter out of our waterways.
Shop Local: Visit a local farmers market or look for Maryland-grown produce and seasonal ingredients at your grocery store. Supporting local farmers helps strengthen our communities while bringing local flavor to your holiday table.
This season is a time to reflect on what we are grateful for and how we can give back. Whether we are planting a tree, reducing waste, or making more thoughtful choices at home, we all have a role to play in protecting the places we call home.
Thank you for being part of this work and for helping to keep Maryland clean, healthy, and beautiful. I wish you and your loved ones a safe, joyful, and sustainable holiday season!
