Earth Day is my favorite time of year. We celebrate the beauty of our natural world. We also take action.
All across Maryland, thousands of volunteers, community groups, and state agencies are coming together to plant the next generation of trees through our 5 Million Trees initiative. More than 1.5 million trees have already taken root, and each one helps us fight climate change, clean our air, and strengthen our communities.
Trees do more than beautify neighborhoods. Through photosynthesis, they remove carbon dioxide – a leading greenhouse gas – from the atmosphere. And the benefits go beyond that. Planting and caring for these trees creates jobs, supports local communities, and brings people together to make a real difference. This Earth Month, we encourage you to “Plant a tree. Make it count. And breathe easier.”
We also recognize April as Maryland Climate Education Month, proclaimed by Governor Wes Moore, and highlight the fourth annual Climate Teach-In, where students and teachers take the lead. These moments remind us that climate action begins with learning, connection, and community. They are also a call for all of us to get outdoors, get active, and plant a tree.
Every tree planted and every neighborhood made greener creates lasting benefits for our state. Please check our community calendar, find a volunteer event near you, and join us in planting a stronger, healthier, and more resilient Maryland, one tree at a time.
