Whether it’s watching a Fourth of July parade, grilling in the backyard, or heading to the beach, summer is a time when we come together and appreciate all that makes Maryland special. But while we enjoy the season, it’s also important to be mindful of the things we can do to be safe and sustainable.
Every summer, the Maryland Department of the Environment works with local health departments that monitor water quality at beaches and swimming areas across the state. Before you pack up the car and head to the water, I encourage you to check our beach advisory map. There, you can find the latest information about water conditions, closures, and advisories based on bacteria levels, rainfall, and other environmental indicators. And if you are fishing, our fish consumption advisory map is useful and can be accessed from your phone.
Our goal is simple: to help you and your family stay safe while enjoying Maryland’s natural beauty. Whether you're swimming in the Bay or enjoying one of our freshwater lakes, we want you to have peace of mind knowing the water is being tested regularly and results are posted transparently. We’re also working year-round to reduce stormwater runoff and prevent pollution that can lead to unsafe swimming conditions in the first place.
Also remember that a large area of our state is under a drought warning. As dry conditions persist, our rivers and reservoirs are feeling the strain. The Department of the Environment is closely monitoring water supplies and working with local officials to encourage voluntary conservation in affected areas.
While this may not mean mandatory restrictions, it does mean that each of us can do our part. Simple steps like reducing outdoor watering, fixing leaks, and turning off taps while brushing your teeth can make a real difference when multiplied across communities.
Our water resources are essential for more than just recreation. They support wildlife, agriculture, and the health of every Marylander. As we celebrate the season, let’s also take a moment to reflect on how we care for these shared resources, especially when they’re under stress.
This summer, let’s make it a season of stewardship as well as celebration. Enjoy your time with family and friends. Dive into Maryland’s beautiful waters, but do it safely. And as you admire the fireworks in the night sky, remember that the most important spark is the one we ignite through awareness, responsibility, and action.
Thank you for your partnership in protecting Maryland’s environment, this summer and every season.
