The landscape of environmental policy is changing, and I am reminded of the many ways we can advance our progress toward a sustainable future for Maryland despite challenges. Recent federal actions, including President Trump’s executive orders on climate, electric vehicles, and environmental justice, underscore the importance of finding equilibrium—thinking strategically and making smart choices to advance clean air, land and water.
Here in Maryland, we are uniquely positioned to lead by example. Our state is home to clean energy innovators, including companies developing electric semi-trucks, advancing battery technology, and building the charging infrastructure. Our commitment to fostering innovation and driving economic growth makes clear that addressing climate change and building a strong economy are not just compatible, but mutually reinforcing goals.
When we invest in cleaner air, land, and water, we are investing in our health, our future, and our economic resilience. That’s why, as a state, we stand firm in support of initiatives that:
Grow clean industries and jobs that position us as a leader in the global economy.
Protect our communities and ensure everyone has access to a healthy environment.
Reduce carbon emissions to fight the impacts of climate change.
We are already seeing transformative progress in fields such as autonomous vehicles, carbon capture, and renewable energy. These advancements not only reduce environmental impact but also create jobs, attract investment, and bolster our economy. The clean economy is not a distant vision. It is here, now, and thriving in Maryland.
I’m inspired by Black History Month—a time to honor the rich legacy and contributions of African Americans to every facet of our society, including environmental conservation and preservation. From trailblazers like Dr. Robert Bullard to the unsung heroes in our own communities, African Americans have been instrumental in shaping a more equitable, sustainable future. We have a great program planned here at our headquarters that we will share on our YouTube page.
