Looking back on 2024, it has been a tremendous year of progress.
I’m filled with gratitude and pride for all we’ve accomplished together this year. It was a year of change, challenges and opportunities, and I remain inspired by Marylanders' resilience and commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier future.
This agency was one of the first on the scene of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, which reminded us of the critical role infrastructure plays in thriving communities. I had the privilege of traveling across the state—from Turner Station to Kent County, from Hagerstown to Southern Maryland—meeting with residents, witnessing innovation, and celebrating progress. We played a leadership role on climate change, stepped up enforcement of environmental violations and brought more people to the table in the decision making process than ever before.
Baltimore City launched its first fleet of 25 electric buses, prioritizing neighborhoods most in need. About 240 electric buses are on the road in six jurisdictions, with more to come. I still vividly remember riding the bus to school as a child and the unmistakable diesel fumes we unknowingly breathed in. Today, we know better and are acting to ensure every child has a clean, healthy ride to school.
We celebrated the opening of WSSC Water’s Piscataway Bioenergy Facility, where waste from Montgomery County and Prince George’s County is transformed into power. My agency proudly financed nearly $200 million to this project that reduces greenhouse gases, keeps pollutants out of the Chesapeake Bay, and supports green jobs and a sustainable, circular economy.
Governor Wes Moore stepped up to the plate with investments in electric vehicle charging infrastructure and green buildings, as well as an executive order directing us to require cleaner heating and cooling products from manufacturers and to make every agency of state government greener.
As we close 2024, I reflect not just on our work, but also on the partnerships that made it possible. Your dedication fuels our progress, from schools to local governments, to innovative utilities and community organizations.
Let’s carry this momentum forward into 2025. Together, we can build on these achievements, ensuring a sustainable future for all Marylanders.
I wish you and your loved ones a joyous holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
