Climate Week 2024 is in the books, and I am so proud to represent the great state of Maryland on the world stage. This annual conference is the largest of its kind in the United States. It brings thought leaders, businesses, and champions together for a week of collaboration and connection as we work toward a greener, more sustainable future.
This year’s theme is “It’s Time,” and I cannot agree more. The time to push for progress is now. We must connect with each other to learn about data and science and be intentional in our collaboration to solve these big problems.
One of my favorite moments was participating as a panelist on a “Shark Tank” style pitch competition. Organized by the Québec Government, four clean technology companies showcased their innovative and sustainable solutions to achieve a cleaner economy to a panel composed of investors and policy executives.
One inspiring pitch came from a company working to improve aging water infrastructure by renewing existing lines from the inside rather than digging them out with heavy equipment. This innovative technology saves greenhouse gas emissions, all while reducing water loss and avoiding waste being sent to the landfills. These are smart ideas that help us solve multiple problems at once.
Another highlight was meeting one-on-one with the Government of Quebec Minister of Environment, Mr. Benoit Charette. It was a pleasure to meet and discuss financial solutions to climate change, the importance of maintaining a fair and just transition, and new ways of collaboration between governments and the private sector.
Our countries and regions are tied together in many ways, and climate change has an interesting way of reminding us of this. For instance, two summers ago, we experienced several code red days on the East Coast—in Maryland—from the fires raging in Canada.
My heart aches when I see the wildfires plaguing both our countries.
We are proud to be part of the solution globally and to join with our neighbors to reduce carbon emissions for the future survival of the human race.
Together we can tackle this problem.
