Team Maryland was represented well at Climate Week in New York City recently. With Governor Wes Moore and myself standing side by side, we joined leaders committed to tackling one the biggest issues of our generation.
Maryland signed the Under2 Coalition's Agreement to join 160 governments around the world committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as other agreements to promote zero emissions vehicles and move our state toward all-electric home heating and air conditioning systems.
Our goal is to reduce emissions by 60 percent by 2031, convert to green energy by 2035, and achieve net zero emissions by 2045.
Climate change is a real threat. It will require hard choices for all of us, including consumers. It starts with a commitment to renewable energy and green jobs, and a new mindset focused on moving to electric vehicles on the roads and efficient appliances in our homes.
Technology is rapidly evolving, and this administration is focused on making sure that our state has laid the foundation to respond, creating green jobs and a cleaner environment.
Our planet is warming due to human activity. We urgently need to change our behaviors for our collective health and well-being. We are building a green economy that leaves no one behind. We have no choice but to take aggressive action and lean into innovation. Our lives depend on it.
We’re taking an all-of-society approach, which means that government cannot solve the problem alone. It starts all the way at the individual level, with composting and recycling, maybe converting your oil home heating system to a heat pump, all the way up to fossil fuel companies moving to renewable and low-carbon energy production.
We can do this together. Maryland will lead the way to a healthier and more prosperous future.
