September 19: Latin Lovers Make Better Gardeners
10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Lake House

During this free workshop sponsored by the Maryland Native Plant Society, Master Gardener Suzanne Hill will reveal how Botanical Latin can be fun, humorous and contain valuable information about plant origin, growth habit, flower or leaf form, color, historical use, and more.


Weed or Wildflower

September 20: Weed or Wildflower?
9-10:30 a.m. at the Native Plant Garden (Rain date 9/23)

Bring your work gloves, kneeling pads, weeding tools, and some elbow grease to help remove unwanted plants from our native plant garden.

Please come prepared with your own insect spray, sunscreen and water.


New Germany Night Sky

September 21: Stargazing
8-11 p.m. at the Lake House (Shine only)

The Cumberland Astronomy Club will host this public stargazing event. Seasoned astronomers will share telescopes and teach about the night sky.


Brook Trout

September 22: Trees for Trout                           
2 p.m. at the Lake House

During this presentation, stream experts will discuss what they're doing to protect and restore fish habitat at Big Run State Park, and explain why trees and logs are so important to our native trout population.  


Sign Post

September 28: Lend a Hand for Public Lands!                9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at Trailhead - Parking Lot #5 (Shine only)

Join staff for a volunteer work day in celebration of National Public Lands Day. We will construct and install a bulletin board at the trailhead and paint sign posts. This is best suited for ages 12 and up. Please bring work gloves.


New Germany Cabin 11, 1934

Self-Guided: New Germany - Past & Present
Daily, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Ranger Station 

Stop by the Ranger Station to start this self-guided walking tour, and learn the history of New Germany as a 19th century industrial community, Civilian Conservation Corps camp and state park.  


Unless otherwise noted, events are held rain or shine, free and fun for all ages; donations are always welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Dress for the weather/activity, wear sunscreen and insect repellent, bring plenty of water and snacks, and check for ticks.

New Germany staff also manages Big Run, Casselman River Bridge and Dans Mountain state parks.
