Apprenticeship Testimony on Capitol Hill

 

Secretary Tiffany Robinson was invited to testify before a Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education & Labor about Maryland's successful registered apprenticeship program. Secretary Robinson provided an overview of the best practices and partnerships that have transformed apprenticeships into the premier workforce development tool they are today. Members of the Committee were interested to hear a state's perspective on the re-authorization of the National Apprenticeship Act. To watch the hearing, visit youtu.be/49iGvj2m-MI.

Governor's Workforce Development Board

JA Inspire on the Eastern Shore

 

The Governor's Workforce Development Board (GWDB) attended JA Inspire, a coalition of educators and businesses led by Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore. JA Inspire was a hands-on career exploration event held in Ocean City with over 3,000 eighth grade students from six Maryland counties in attendance. Students got a chance to interact with educators and local businesses to learn more about a variety of career options through engaging and interactive exhibits.

Whiting-Turner Construction Presentation

 

Division of Labor and Industry Administrator Jim Tudor travel to the Eastern Shore to lead a seminar on prevailing wage. Jim was invited by Whiting-Turner Construction, who hosted the meeting for their subcontractors working on the Salisbury University Maggs Natatorium Project. Representatives from nearly 20 subcontractors attended the two hours presentation to learn more about the prevailing wage and how to submit certified payroll reports online.

 

The partnership was born out of Labor and Whiting-Turner’s joint interest in education, awareness, and compliance. The Division of Labor and Industry looks forward to hosting additional meetings like this for contractors and businesses alike!


Workforce Development and Adult Learning

Job Fair at the Cumberland American Job Center

 

On February 27, the Cumberland American Job Center team held an on-site job fair for restaurant and retail businesses. The team reached out to employers not targeted in the normal job fairs as well as some regular business customers. Letters were sent to all Maryland Workforce Exchange customers in the local area. Twenty-nine businesses and over 400 job seekers participated.

This was a highly successful job fair led by DWDAL staff members Brian Grim, Benjamin Russell, Katie Marvin, Sean Santmyire, David Levesque, Bethany McMulllen, Chap Richardson, James Marchinke, and Angella Moon. In addition, partners from Allegany College, Western Maryland Consortium and Legal Aid, and recruiters from US Army and United States Marine Corps participated in the event.

Small Business Regulatory Assistance

Small Business Partner Meeting in Worcester County 

 

Jan Walker-Emeogo from the Office of Small Business Regulatory Assistance (OSBRA) traveled to Worcester County for a Small Business Partner Meeting. She was joined by Director of Worcester County Economic Development Kathryn Gordon, Senior Business Development Representative at MD Commerce Mindie Burgoyne, and MBE Outreach Director at MD Commerce Tonya Wigfall. The group discussed challenges impacting the small business community, small business workshop series collaboration and an overview of OSBRA services.
