UNION MILLS HOMESTEAD EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO RETIRE
Long‐Time Executive Director Jane Sewell to Retire After 20 Years
Union Mills, Maryland – The Union Mills Homestead Foundation, Inc. announces that its long‐time Executive Director Jane S. Sewell is retiring. Jane Sewell has been the Executive Director of the organization since 2000, responsible for operation and interpretation of the historic site north of Westminster, MD. Her retirement will be effective February 1, 2021.
Jane Sewell took over as Executive Director in 2000, after the retirement of her predecessor Esther Shriver, and has successfully managed the organization through a period involving many notable successes. Among the many achievements during her tenure: Major grant funding from the State of Maryland for restoration of the roofs on the historic structures on the property. That work is now underway. During her tenure the organization also expanded its public event schedule, adding the Maryland Microbrewery Festival to its annual lineup of events. The Maryland Microbrewery Festival is now a major regional beer festival drawing visitors to Carroll County.

Jane Sewell has scored major accomplishments in the area of community engagement. For many years she served as a co‐chair of the Celebrating America initiative in Carroll County, highlighting the many history‐related organizations in the County. She also was appointed by the County Commissioners as a member of the County’s Long Term Advisory Council. And she effectively served to advance the Union Mills Homestead’s relationship with the Carroll County Government, which owns the Union Mills Homestead property. |
The Union Mills Homestead Foundation, Inc. was founded in 1964 to operate and preserve the Union Mills Homestead, which dates to 1797. The Union Mills Homestead now sees visitation in excess of 10,000 people a year and each summer season the Union Mills Homestead is open for public tours of the historic property. Since the organization’s founding it has hosted tours of the historic Homestead of Maryland’s Shriver family. A major attraction at the site is the restored Shriver Grist Mill, providing a unique working example of a mill, furthering the Carroll County community's understanding of the role of flour milling in early industrial growth in our region.
